Hi,
I have tried reading threads associated with 720x756 ripping but am totally lost.
I have been trying to rip a number of movies to Xvid for play in a Buffalo Linktheater (which seems faily sensitive). When trying to rip using AutoGK but I just cannot seem to get it right.
They are all 720x576 but AutoGK will output the file mostly at 720x304 although some are at 320. I had a problem with one movie which was converting at 4:3 instead of 16:9 so I forced this and the output was 720x416 (previously when recognised as 4:3 it output at 720x544).
They are viewable but I am not sure that I am doing the right conversion and as each conversion takes a lot of time it would be nice to know it is working correctly.
Thanks,
Adam

Unless the DVD is just broken (like the one you had to force), AGK will detect the correct aspect ratio and resize it to always have a 1:1 PAR. On DVD, most movies are stored in what's called anamorphic, where the film is stretched out to take advantage of as much of the resolution as possible. Since not all players respect PAR/DAR, and it looks all distorted if it's not, resizing to 1:1 is the most compatible method.

The MKV container, unlike DivX and Xvid, allows non-square pixels and so Anamorphic encodes can be done directly...
This would entail encoding at 720x576 directly and then signalling the correct DAResolution of 1024x576... given a (720x576 PAL / 16:9) movie.
In your case the 720 square-pixel equivalent is 720x405 (assuming that there is no cropping)... which would probably be downsized to 720x400 or maybe 720x416, to accommodate MOD16.

... and 720x306 for 2.35:1 movies (after cropping the blacks bars), which would probably be downsized to 720x304 or maybe 720x320, to accommodate MOD16.

Too true... though I encoded 'Lord of the Rings 1' last night which has a 2.4:1 aspect ratio... making it 720x300 or 720x304 (MOD16)

btw
Africa is a big place but I'm willing to bet you're at UCT or Wits.

Not to nitpick or anything, but there's nothing about DivX and XviD that doesn't allow for anamorphic encoding. MKV does have very good support for it, but it can be done perfectly well with an AVI container as well, provided the splitter handles it correctly. Some SAPs don't..

Nitpicking is all good...
