what field operation to use?

some dvds ive been trying to rip will start off as ntsc interlaced in dgindex, but then after a few seconds switch to progressive and a percentage. the percentage climbs fast, and at around 80% it slows down a bit. ive let it go for about 5 minutes but it still didnt reach 95% or higher, however it was still climbing. im dont know if i need to use forced film in dgindex? or if i need to use forced film in gknot? or both? i tried using both in one movie and it came out very nice, but the next movie came out crappy using those.

how do i know what to use?

If it doesn't work out with force film, then don't use force film! You likely have a hybrid or a mix of hard and soft telecine, and you'll have to use a more advanced solution.

You need to inspect your source video to determine what you have. There are no simple recipes.

the movie is high school musical encore edition. i just tested it, and let it run in dgindex for an hour. it stayed on progressive at 99% for a solid 50 minutes. im pretty new to xvid encoding, so what are my other options for finding out about the source/encoding options?

The progressive/interlaced frame indicator is paradoxically not that useful in determining the nature of the source material. The reason is explained in the user manual so I won't repeat it.

I can't offer you any shortcuts. You're going to have to learn about video and then step through the fields to determine the nature of your source video.

thanks for the reply. i wasn't asking for shortcuts. i was just asking for links to some recommended reading on the subject. but nm, ill start off with the manuals/stickies in the forums.
