I have a mkv file that uses h264 codec. I used MKVExtractGUI to extract everything. Then I used avc2avi to convert the raw h264 to avi then I merge the audio & video in virtualdub but when I play it the audio is unsync. Why is that?

sync problems are common when using current technologies (avc) in outdated technologies (avi and vfw)

what do you want to do with avi, you cant do with mkv?

I want to play it on my dvd player which supports divx/xvid

remuxing avc to avi wont make it to be divx/xvid

you need to reencode the video, eg in megui or via avisynth's directshowsource() in virtualdub

Why do I need to use avisynth when I can open it through virtualdub? I did try to convert it to xvid but the audio is still unsync.

are you sure you set the correct framerate for your final file?

Because you screwed up the muxing. You can hardly convert from a file you already know is out of sync. Start from the original, use directshowsource("file.mkv",fps=24,convertfps=true) and load that into vdub, and all sync problems will vanish.

Same answer given every other time this comes up. Don't bang your head on the wall trying to make something work when it won't, unless you're very familiar with mixing timecodes with avi.

As an aside, your name reminds me of my favorite song from leaf piano collection...
