I am having a heck of a time finding relevant info regarding mpeg-2 authoring. If my problem is not common, it probably will be in the very near future.

I bought a Phillips DVD+RW and a ATI All in One Radeon Card ( an ADS Technologies USB instant DVD encoder is on the way) .

The purpose was to convert a Videotape library into DVD format for a more permanent solution to storing these Videos.

The Recorder came with Sonics MyDVD which flat would not work under any circumstances. I then Downloaded the Trail version of Uleads MovieFactory and have gotten very reliable results. EXCEPT, for the audio!

The audio is out of sync regardless of what I have attempted to do to correct it, such as encoding in the standard NTSC DVD format thus eliminating any conversion of file types. Now the original files are fine, but when they go to DVD, the sound and Video don’t match.

I have also tried burning the DVD image to Hard disk and then burning the DVD with Nero. Same results.

I have read in some of these posts that using a separate wav file will often eliminate this problem but Moviefactory is the only program that will work with the Phillips drive and it does not appear to offer that option.

I am not one to ask dumb questions if there is any way to avoid it, but I have downloaded and read every manual I could find ( i.e. MovieFactory, Videostudio 5, Mediastudio Pro, and a few others), in all I have probably read 800 pages in the last five days and this topic is conspicuously absent from every one.
In addition, I can not find one book that deals with DVD Authoring and transcoding anywhere.

I am not really a newbie to Computers and have been building my own and solving hardware problems since 1990. But I am lost on this. Especially since published reference material appears to be non-existent. If I could find a book that covered this topic I would go buy it and read it.
Besides, all I wanted to do was convert a Library of old Home Movies and Music Videos to DVD. I could have just bought a Home DVD burner but I believed having the hardware on the computer would be far more useful.

I can appreciate the way you guys love tinkering with this stuff, but on this I don’t really want to build the car, I just want to drive it.

So here is the simple question, and I admit I have not been able to learn enough to not sound stupid:

Is there any Software out there that will allow you to import captured mpeg-2 files and create a DVD with reliable results? Ex: Insync audio, reliable picture quality ,etc?

I must admit I am amazed to have to ask this. The shelves are filled with DVD Authoring software which says “ Convert your Videotapes into DVD!” and every attempt I have made ( along with many others from what I have read) are not able to have audio and video in sync reliably.

You would think that that would be a basic requirement for this type of product. And even more interesting is none of the Authoring Programs Manuals I have read even discuss the possibility of sync problems, let alone how to correct them.

These products are being sold to average users with the promise of a simple solution to converting analog video to a DVD format. Which is all I really wanted to do.

Instead I find myself writing a long winded Post to Computer Enthusiasts praying that they will have the patience to tell me why I am having to learn how to build a VCR when all I wanted to do was push Record.

Now am I missing something here?

I have been messing with Computers for over ten years and am baffled. I wonder how the average users these programs are aimed at are doing?

I have AIW Radeon and HP DVD+RW drive... Doesn't matter. Both Philips and HP are the same Ricoh MP5120 drive.

Just make this:

1) Capture Video with your MMC 7.5 software (If you have an older version, download it from ATI's support page or radeon.ru page) @ MPEG-2 352x480 or 720X480 NTSC settings or 352x576 or 720x576 PAL settings. Bitrate must be lower than 9.8 MBps (Depending of your machine you must adjust bitrate and Motion Estimation Search settings to avoid frame drop)
Note: be carefull with volume settings in your Audio line-in.

2) Rename your captured file from *.mp2 to *.mpg

3) Download the latest patch update from MyDVD 3 from HP's site:

First choose your language, then your OS and finally the MyDVD update patch file.(You can download RecordNow 3.5, but I don't know if this file is a patch or if this is the full version. This software is the best for Standalone DVD-Video players compatibility)

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/swindexes/hpdvdwrite63712_swen.html

4) Open MyDVD and Import your *.mpg's MMC file in your new Authoring proyect.

5) This patched version will transcode correctly your audio. And finally you can record to DVD+RW media or write your VIDEO_TS folder in your HD and then record it with RecordNow Software.

Thanks I appreciate your help.

It sounds like what you are telling me is that dropping frames is primarily what creates this problem. I thought as much.

Would have been a lot easier if one of the software or hardware manuals I have read ( any of them) would have addressed this issue.

I have been through a lot of Boards so far looking for answers and there are a lot of unhappy and confused people out there.
