Hi!

I want to convert a 4.36GB mkv (264) movie (bitrate 4500kbps) to wmv using WMNicEnc.
I tried it twice, first with the default bitrate 60000 and the ending file was huge. I tried again with 35000 and it ended up at 14GB! I am using VBR Quality 100 btw.

I thought 60000 was not really in the same format as the 4500kbps according to some web I read, so thats why I left it at that high default one but now I am confused. I see no reason for a 4.36GB to convert into a 14GB file even though they are different formats, I am pretty sure that even if 264 is a better format, I wont need 14GB to match the quality of the 4.36GB file.

So, what settings do you recommend for this movie in the bit rate and VBR parameters?

Thanks

Hi!

Correct me if I'm wrong but, based on the 4.36Gb filesize, I presume you've compressed a double-layered commercial DVD to fit on a single-layered DVD.

If so, rather than converting and again compressing an already compressed file (MKV-264) to WMV format, I'd suggest you directly compress the double-layered DVD to WMV...

What is the DVD title and region? (Some are more compressible than others)

Actually is Fifth Element BluRay rip into a very small 4.36GB. Interestingly enough, while this may seem small, when I compared a BluRay rip of Casino Royale to the DVD version, even at 4.5GB, the Bluray rip was way more detailed than the retail DVD version.

Actually is Fifth Element BluRay ripI'd still suggest that you re-rip your original BluRay DVD and compress directly to WMV...

I understand your point but I will still like to know what will be good settings to transfer the current mkv to wmv. Do I really need to go with a much bigger file size or is that not needed.
I already did a new test and ended up with a 5.7GB file and now I am doing a new test which according to my calculations will result in a ~8GB file.
Still, I would like to hear your recommended settings guys.

Are you maintaining the original resolution ?

Your BluRay movie is probably already encoded in Mpeg-4 (Part 10), ie H264, and so that the only way to reduce filesize is to...
1) downsize or
2) reduce quality (ie, using any bitrate lower the original 4500kbps)...

The choice is your's.

btw
You could use AutoMKV with the 18-CQ-CRF profile set to the WMV container... and see how you feel about the results.

Good. So I guess my problem is that I am a bit confused about how to set the program for say, exactly an 8000kbps bit rate. For instance, yesterday I selected in the bit rate area a 10000 and in the VBR Quality 95 and according to the file info, I have an almost 15000kpbs bit rate video.

I am a noob at all this and the more I read the more my mind gets confused.

BTW, is there a place to get "correct" settings for ffdshow video, audio since they tend to appear on my task bar when I am running some programs?

I hate to say this but I'm even more of a noob than you... really clueless to boot...

I've never encoded either, to or from, WMV, a lot less even used WMNicEnc... with AutoMKV you merely set your filesize, 4.5 GB DVD, for eg, choose your level of quality profile, slow medium or fast... and get go...
If you choose the MKV container you can even span multiple disc's, as with WinRAR, WinZip... and so your movie will just carry-on from the 2nd disc...

Re-reading your original post... your MKV has a 4500 bitrate... the original has clearly much more... so that a 4500 br is really where you want to be, given a single-layer 4.5 GB DVD...
The maths stays the same for any format though the quality may change... I doubt that the WMV container uses much more space than MKV...
