Which software you use to convert DVD to h.264?

I am user switching from xvid to h.264. Before, I was using avisynth and virtualdub to convert to xvid. But since I am switching to h.264, which I heard has better quality. I don't know which software should I use to convert to h.264. The same one virtualdub? or? Does AutoGK works?

Better use Avidemux instead of VirtualDub ;)

You can open VOB files and the latest x264 encoder is built-in. Also all filters you'll need are built-in.

You may continue to use AviSynth and VirtualDub (or VirtualDub-MPEG (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/VirtualDub-MPEG2.htm)) to preview, get frame numbers, and calculate 2pass bitrate using Xvid calculator. Only the encoding step needs to be changed.

I am using a batch file with all the options set, which calls x264.exe. I only change the filenames and bitrate in the *.bat file as I encode new files.

My method is the same as j7n. Use a batch file on x264 (via AVISynth) and output to an mkv file, then mux the video stream with the audio (converted to AAC) using mkvtoolnix.

HandBrake is very, very good too going from DvD to H.264.

It's nice to see some of the finer Mac tools now available for Windows as well.

i would use megui as well, its a steeper learning curve, but once you have it sorted, your fine :)

its has all the tools you would need to convert your decrypted DVD

Nero Digital, but it cost $$$
AutoMKV, Handbrake are both good.

The big question is; Are you going to play these movies only on you computer or also in a SAP:

Computer Only> Encode with any tool you want, use any feature you want to get the best picture. Use MeGui or AutoMKV to your hearts content.

Stand Alone Player> No one really knows; you might use a program that works with Apple TV, but that implementation of AVC is pretty weak. My best guess is Nero Digital AVC with the Standard Profile or HandBrake would be the most likely to work on future hardware.

DivX gave a lot more clarity to the ASP market than we have in the AVC market. I miss DivX.

Yes, the ability to "go stand-alone" is important.

I too miss DivX... and this discussion was on the DivX boards as well, but for the benefit of the Doom9 contingent..

If I were to bet, Nero Digital and HandBrake, with their narrow specifics, would be my vote for Windows encoders/GUIs that will produce H.264 content least likely to remain stranded on your PC in playback-land.

i have been using Gordian knot, but its discontinued (i don't know why) and its quite good. now i need to find out what the difference is between x264 & h264.

H.264 is the name of the standard and x264 is an implementation of it. Just like MPEG-4 ASP is a standard and XviD and divx are implementations.
