Someone has suggested to me that pioneer do not make their own burners (for pc) and they are rebranded NEC's.

True?

Hi!

No, they're not.

On the other hand, you'll find at least some SONY burners ARE re-badged NECs...

well its a little more complicated than that.

for the last few years sony burners have been made by lite-on.

http://www.dvd-recordable.org/Article1074.phtml

however sony and nec have just gone in to a joint venture

http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/26/sony-nec-optiarc-joint-venture-set-to-release-18x-dvd-burner/

the interesting things is

Sources quoted by DigiTimes indicate that soon the actual drive manufacturing will be outsourced to Lite-On IT, whose prowess in volume production should complement Sony's skill at developing optical pick-up heads and NEC's chipset design capabilities

as for the original question .. agree, pioneer are not rebadged nec. they make their own.

Nothing very complicated. My recently purchased SONY AW-Q170A is listed as "OEM SONY-NEC" and "Chipset NEC"...

My recently purchased SONY AW-Q170A is listed as "OEM SONY-NEC" and "Chipset NEC"...
and is no doubt part of the optiarc deal in the second link i gave.

however it is possible, as suggested in that article, that the sony models could be built by lite-on with the nec chipset that is part of the optiarc deal.
having a quick look the manufacturer listed appears to be sony. however since they do not actually make drives anymore, but as i said have had lite-on do it for these last several years, one has to assume that it is quite possible lite-on is manufacturing these for sony aswell. but who knows for sure. :)

Nothing very complicated.
so yes it is a little more complicated than just saying the sonys have an nec chipset.
