My copy of Planet Earth shipped from Amazon today and I should get it by Friday. Seeing as how this is one of the first releases to revoke current PC player software, I'll try and see what luck I have finding title keys in memory (no doubt they wouldn't be stupid enough to leave VUKs in memory anymore). We can use this thread to explore key extraction on the hardened players.

Why dont you just try to find the keys in memory for one of the old dics on the new player?? its the same thing.

The encryption method on the disc hasnt changed, only the software player has changed.

Because the players most likely heavily obfuscate keys now. For example it would be possible to store the first 8 bits of the key at one offset, the next 4 at another, and so on. Portions could be XORed with random data. We have to figure out the obfuscation "algorithm" first.

Fortunately there are only several obfuscations they could use before it would be necessary to keep intermediate data in memory (thereby rendering the whole obfuscation useless). It shouldn't be terribly hard to figure out using already known keys with old disks, and it only needs to be figured out once by one person.

Please post your results whenever you get your discs and have a chance to play around with them. While I haven't yet entered the HD-DVD market, if I can make a successful backup copy of this series they'll be the first ones I buy. This Planet Earth series I bet is just breathtaking on HD. Looking forward to it.

This makes no sense to me. To find out if the hardened players are using a new obfuscation technique, looking at an old disc is the easiest first step. If you find a known key in memory, then it's not obfuscating old keys. It seems like the logical approach to me.

It would not surprise me to find out that they handle decryption of old discs differently from new discs, just to make it more difficult to track the decryption process. Thus, finding no obfuscation of keys for old discs doesn't say much about new discs, but as a first step it makes sense.

just got my planet earth hddvd. plays with anydvd hd 6.1.3.6 & powerdvd 7.3.

also, was able to get vuk with aacskeys, and verified using validatevuk. (with anydvd disabled, obv)

looks like no aacs changes yet!

can someone explain to me what is going on with "new AACS" and what it means for me?

revoking software/devices, VUKS, etc.. i don't understand:(

right now i have an xbox hddvd drive, anydvd, and powerdvd 7.1 and haven't had any issues. how will the new protection affect me?

Currently the answer to your question is: Who knows? Anyone that tells you anything otherwise is either working for Microsoft or Toshiba and has insider information, or lies to you.

We can speculate, that yes, you will need an update. However this question is best asked to amirm (http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/exec/amirm/default.mspx) in AVSforum insider thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=774635&page=140&pp=30). He knows the answers. We speculate.

Do you have a disc that you can't play? Until you do, the question is moot any way.

(Yes, I am just a little bit frustrated at you posting many different posts in different threads about your Xbox HD-DVD drive, instead of spending a few minutes, using search and reading all the information that was already posted.)

btw i did read up, but there is so many posts with only bits of information.. it is like stepping into the middle of a conversation .. you are missing a lot of information.
