View Full Version : All video use = 100% CPU use

This is pretty frustrating, and it hasn't really been a good week for my desktop. I was nailed with a virus early in the week, and when I realized I was fighting a futile battle, I did a clean install of Windows XP Pro.

I've updated XP with the most recent updates, installed the K-Lite Codec Pack, Real Alternative, and Quicktime Alternative. I go to pop open an .avi file, and the whole computer grinds to a hault. The CPU usage goes to 100% and it's near impossible to get MPC to close.

This happens with any type of file that's video, but not on anything audio. I don't believe it's any sort of hardware issue because a few days ago -- previrus -- everything worked perfectly normal. Even more strange is that (I'm posting on my laptop) I have the same configuration here of programs, and it works great.

Windows XP: Pro
Athlon XP 2100+
768MB RAM

Go back and uninstall K-lite. Install ffdshow (tryout) alone, accepting all the codecs, and Haali's splitter with all options checked, and that will cover almost everything that all the different K-lite filters muck up.

Is it an XP-M or a regular XP? XP-M can be underclocked, and yours might be stuck that way. Try installing RMClock (http://cpu.rightmark.org/) to regulate it. Along with any CPU, video, and platform/chipset drivers, though that's probably already done.

Oh, and check for the video acceleration settings in the Display control panel, under settings->advanced->troubleshoot. If that's off, that would put the full video rendering on the CPU, which easily overloads even fast ones on large monitors.

Thank you very much! That did it!
