DRF quality problem...

I bought some 500 gb external hds to store all my dvd collection (about 300 dvds i think).

I wanna do this in a "chain" procedure like ripping 30 dvds at a time,load em up and start conversion.

I tried autogk with a target quality of 75 and 77 with various filesize (and this is normal).
The problem is : when i analyze the files with drf analyzer they have a medium drf of 3,2.This is very high for me,cause space is not a problem and cause i watch em in a 40' lcd samsung screen.

I tried fairuse with 2pass and then qt 2 but still nothing under drf 3.
Using 1.1.2 xvid with dual core patch.

What is the prob ? Without using complex avs script is it impossible to achieve a drf of 2 ?

B-frames are encoded with a lower quantizer than I frames and P frames with the default xvid settings. You can adjust the quantizer ratio to 1 and quantizer offset setting to 0 to get the same quantizer as the surrounding P frames (but then you won't benefit much from B frames). Or you can disable BVOPs completely. You can use a custom quantizer matrice to produce a higher quality then standard MPEG matrice. Or encode at q=1, but then you'll get bigger files than the original I think.

But if space is not a problem for you, why not just keep the original ripped DVD as image files on your hard drive and just skip the transcoding to xvid? Any transcoding will decrease the quality.

Anyway I suggest switching to a better custom quantizer matrice, encode to anamorphic PAR instead of resizing and be happy with the results you will get with q=3. Then you can shrink the file sizes a bit compared to original DVDs but still get nice quality. Look at the sticky XviD presets thread and see if you like the results with that method of encoding.

Thanks for the answer. My aim is xvid max 2 gb every film with ac3 track inside. I will play everything through an old xbox with media center.Xbox post processing the source very well.Don't wanna keep original dvd iso,cause of space and "better handling " of avi files (i have somore portable media centers too like archos).


But i want better results.With autogk and fairuse i cannot use modified matrix i think.

What else can i use ? Automkv ? Can someone help me with automkv settings for "best quality in 2 gb with ac3 ?" :)

Follow the suggestions in the sticky thread: Xvid Presets (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=119399). Ready-made profiles exist for MeGUI, which AutoMKV can use. Remember to filter it first, like AutoGK does.

And don't worry so much about DRF when you do, it's a bit of a red herring since custom matrices will change DRF-to-quality mapping.

2 possibilities with AGK:
-1 pass target quality
-2 pass target size

You already explored the 1 pass quality but you can go one step further try 85% (should give you final DRF +-2,5) or more up to 100% .

I would go for 2 pass, 2Gb size. It is your maximum size, it will give undersised (without Bframes) for most movies cause the xvid codec will be maxxed out but you will get best of AGK. For some long movies you may reach 2Gb without maxxing but you will get very good quality for that size.

But i want better results.With autogk and fairuse i cannot use modified matrix i think.
It is done auto by AGK but you can specify sharpmatrix in the hidden options.

Yes, it is auto chosen above 700Mb if compressability and resize matches for 2 pass; not so sure for 1 pass

In auto/2 pass it will be resized if neeeded. It should not in 1 pass

My advice: do a first (eventually trimmed) auto encode and change params after ;search the logs and look for improvements if any.

If you continue with AGK, this will be more suited in the GK/AGK than Xvid thread, you may want to ask a mod to move it ...

The 85% preset is using the 6of9 matrix, which is even sharper than the sharp matrix AutoGK is using.

Your can also try my script which is especially designed for batch encoding. It even picks the right preset automatically for your target size of each individual movie.
