Have been using DVD Rebuilder for some time without problems. Saw something tonight about the wonders of Div X. Do I take it that the quality of Rebuilder would far exceed any Div X output and that Div X is only good for extremely high compression ?

Do you mean "DivX" which is a codec? In theory, DivX should give similar results with a smaller file than MPEG2. However, there's only so much that cna be done with data compression, regardless of codec. DivX is a form of MPEG-4, sort of...

Thanks Fred. I am perfectly happy with Rebuilder. was just curious about DivX and all the talk about movies on CD rather than DVD.

oh yeah... the time has come - now everyone can see the beginning of... "do you remember the time when people saved movies on CD. Oh yeah, once I've heard my grandpa talkin' about it." :D
oh shit, I'm gettin' old but I can say I was part of that movement :)

...was just curious about DivX and all the talk about movies on CD rather than DVD.You stumbled Harrysmiith on some "ancient history". DVD burners and discs are so cheap now that "why bother" compressing to CD.
The primary reason for compression to DivX and Xvid and what-have-you is to reduce filesizes (of both standard and high-definition programs) for storage on a media-serving PC and distribution on your home network.
Hard disk costs are going so low though that even THAT reason may go away soon enough. Seems I saw a terabyte server for $350 the other day... wow...

I don't create DivX at all. MPEG-2 encoders are far more refined. If the video is going to be distributed (web site, demo discs, etc.) I use Flash because the chroma isn't subject to "correction" by the player on somebody else's computer.
