I was just wondering if there was a way to populate the author tags which Media Player and Windows recognizes and displays upon playback. In VirtualDubMod there is an option under the Streams menu called "Video comments," but VirtualDubMod does not support the .MP4 container.

Do you know iTunes/iPod/QuickTime ? :p
MPC with this own mp4 splitter is able to display mp4 tags and some other mp4 taggers. but maybe you want to have an editor ?

There is a utility in the distribution of Nero audio encoder called neroAacTag. It can modify tags of mp4 container.

Maybe Winamp's "MP4 info editor" ???
Just add the MP4 to Winamp's playlist, then Rightclick -> File Information
