Samsung supporting both Blu-ray, HD DVD

Samsung Electronics, which last year introduced the first Blu-ray Disc player, says it will support the rival HD DVD format as well, a move hailed by supporters of the No. 2 entrant in the high-definition disc format war. The Korean consumer electronics manufacturer said Friday it expects to have a dual-format machine that will play Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD software in stores in time for the holidays. The announcement comes at a time when Blu-ray software continues to outsell HD DVD software. HD DVD is supported by three major studios — Universal, Warner and Paramount — but Warner and Paramount also support Blu-ray. 20th Century Fox, Disney and Sony Pictures are exclusively in the Blu-ray camp, as is minimajor Lionsgate.

The announcement comes at a time when Blu-ray software continues to outsell HD DVD software.

The spin here is just unbearable. This article (read: press release) neglects to mention that the overwhelming majority of the "Blu-ray software" they're referring to consists of Playstation 3 games. Ignore those and "continues to outsell" becomes "outsold for the first month," and that's thanks in no small part to Casino Royale.

If you look at raw numbers, Casino Royale on BD outsold some romantic comedy on HD (big surprise!). Turn around and look at the Amazon.com sales rank of big dual format releases like Planet Earth, HD is outselling Blu-ray. It's too early to tell what will happen here but both sides are already spinning numbers and declaring victory. The only numbers that count are head-to-head sales of movies available on both formats.
