Computer locks up during conversion

I'm using WinAvi 7.1 to convert files from .avi to dvd. Recently, my computer started locking up during conversions, generally after about 10% of the conversion was done. I think I've got a corrupt codec, but have not been able to make a positive ID. There is no log created. I have deconverted from MS Media Player 11 to 10, installed Nvidia Pure DVD decoder, and loaded BoliGego Codec Manager 1.0.4.3 but I'm still having problems. Any suggestions to find the culprit? Hi!

Typically, conversion programs push your system to the limit - and overheating of the system frequently results, especially if your system's innards and/or fans have accumulated dust bunnies, grease, etc....
