I was wondering how to configure my Dell Inspiron 9400/E1705 so that I can use my external TFT monitor as an addition to the laptop monitor. So far, I have found to have two options: I can either "replace" my laptop monitor with the external one, so that the laptop monitor turns black, or I can use both parallel, but both show the exact same picture. So, I was trying to find out how to use this supplemental monitor in order to have to different screens.
Thanks in advance!

do you mean EXTEND your desktop to second monitor ? not 2 different desktop ?
two desktop are common in *nix like environment... but in windows... you must use some additional program

To extend your desktop so that each monitor displays differently, simply right-click on the desktop and select Properties. Choose the Settings tab, click on the second monitor (big number 2) and enable "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor" - see attached snapshot.

Ultramon or Powerstrip. That, unfortunately, is just a limitation of Windows.
