ati xvid recording

i am trying to configure mmc 9.03 to record xvid. i am able to record xvid video but the bit rate is too large. i move the slider all the way to 31 and the file is still huge and i have a bunch of dropped frames. i realy need a place to start.
i have had plenty of success using mpg2 and 4 and converting to xvid but i should be able to record xvid?
i am using a aiw 9800pro on a athalon 3200+ with 1.5gb ram

The only explanation for this that audio remains uncompressed. There's no way quant31 can be big.

Did you consider capturing to a fast and high-bitrate stream, and recompress later? You can use two passes this way.

i'm not sure why the audio dosen't work. usualy i record to mpg2 and then compress using auogk. i figure that recording in xvid will get me better quality an save lots of time. i juat don't know what the requirements are or even if it will work

There might be a hidden setting somewhere that allows you to use an ACM codec. If there is, install Lame ACM (http://rarewares.org/mp3.html) and record to 256 or 320. (So that you can recompress it to something decent.)

If not, don't worry about it so much. Uncompressed audio isn't really all that bad; it's only 1440 or 1536 kbps, about 600 megs an hour, and even on my laptop I'd have the space for as much recording as I wanted until I could get around to compressing the audio.

Along with a q2 recording in xvid, make sure you are using the mpeg matrix, or one of the higher bitrate custom matrices. h.263 and low-bitrate ones come out looking grainy (but small) even at q2. That way you get the best possible captures to recompress with later.

If you're still getting massive size even at q31, then you probably have settings b0rked up somewhere. Uninstall and reinstall xvid, and set everything to defaults. Then you should be able to at least capture something without dropping frames all over the place and making a blocky mess :D
