I was given an mpeg file created in Apple Motion2 encoded at 1280 X 720 (16:9). This video is a presentation that needs to be played via DVD player on a large Dell LCD flatscreen display.

I don't have a lot of experience with video files, but I understand basic encoding/transcoding, resolutions, aspect ratios, etc.

Realizing that I need to get to 720 X 480 I tried using TMPGEnc and successfully converted the 1280 X 720 source to 720 X 480 and authored/burned it to DVD.

On my computer using PowerDVD player, the DVD plays flawless and appears as expected. However, when I play the DVD on the DVD player connected to the Dell LCD display, a small portion of the top, bottom, and both sides are cropped.

I initially thought this was just some DVD player or display setting, but it is not. I've tried setting the DVD player to 4:3 and 16:9. I've changed the LCD display settings. No matter what I do, the top and sides are cropped and I cannot get the entire picture to display. It's a presentation, so I can't have the the first letter of each word being cut off.

Now, I have read about safe areas for TV, so if there is stuff being displayed from edge to edge, could that be why I am seeing cropping? If this is the case, why is it showing correct on my laptop LCD, but not the large LCD hooked to the DVD player?

I've been pounding my head on the wall over this for a day now. I'm stumped. I've tried everything I know to try.

Anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

Yes, that's an overscan problem. Playing a DVD on a standalone almots always crop the outer part of the image, while software players on computers don't. It's part of the PAL/NTSC technical legacy. That's why you can often see a black margin around the image in commercial DVDs for movies/series/anime/etc... when you play them on a computer.

So, if this presentation will be played on average standalones, you need to add margins on all sides so all important things are placed into the safe area. No escape to this limitation...
