I use -m j -v --vbr-mtrh -V 4 -b 64 -B 192 --athtype 3 --nspsytune when encoding .ac3s but that's crappy or so i hear.

What do you use for best mp3 sound/reasonable average bitrate?

Use LAME 3.91 with

--alt-preset standard

and if the file size is to large for your needs then use something like

--alt-preset 140

This will give you a nice sounding ABR file with an average bitrate of 140. ABR is now considered superior to VBR but hopefully they keep tuning the VBR code. Hope this helps.

actually, use --alt-preset <bitrate> where <bitrate> is whatever bitrate you want your mp3 to be. I find 140 to be way to high :-) I prefer a good 120 or so.

hey there,

I got a quick question?

Which one is better for quality of sound/vs size ABR or VBR and what settings would u suggest for ABR? is it the same settings as VBR. At the moment i use for VBR ......lame -m j -v -vbr-old -q 0 -b 64 -B 192

Last but not least what do all the filters like ATH or PSY tuning do do any of them make a significant difference to the sound quality or are they still being developed?

@jeremymacmull
I think it's been answered above. ATM ABR files gives better quality and size. Try some of the ABR preset settings you see on this page and you will like:)

The filters you mention do affect quality and size of the encode. I suggest you read the LAME readme's in your LAME folder. Read about all the various switches, it's actually quite thorough.

BTW- It's advised you not change any settings/switches/filters at the moment and just use --alt-presets unless you really really know what your doing.
