Hello.
With the X-Box 360 connected to my PC (Win XP) via USB, I can backup my HD-DVD collection using BackupHDDVD and then play it from my harddisk with full 1080P. True or false?

Absolutely true.
I think you'll need drivers for it (UDP 2.5, you know), but there are widely available drivers, right now (google it! ^^).
But it won't be absolutely true if your PC can't handle 1080P decoding =/

Oops... let me rephrase.
What I want to do is backup my HD DVD material without the protection (AACS etc) and save the files to my PC. Then in the future, play these files from my HTPC which is fully capable of 1080P.

Let me put it this way: if you need to ask such basic questions, perhaps this isn't the place for you. If you were following either my news or searching this forum, you wouldn't have to have started this thread, nor would you have to ask about something that doesn't exist (Blu-ray doesn't use EVO files). Please remember rule 1 before you post for the next time.

Aren't u being a bit over the top? What is so wrong about my question? The fact is, there are just too many threads and too many posts in each of the threads. Yes I did try to find an answer before posting (but could not find one). Yes it is a bit basic (to you). Certainly, the tone of your message is unjustifiable. How was it for you when you first started out?

First, there's a sticky thread at the top of this forum entitled, HD-DVD (and Blu-Ray) decrypting tools (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123282). Second, the response is from Doom9... and you're on doom9.org - I'll leave the rest up to you to figure out.

Stop being a suckup. And you'd better stop responding to this post or you'll just encourage me to write more crap and piss everyone off. If you ignore me, I'll just disappear.

How was it for you when you first started out? There was nobody around helping me and I most definitely didn't waste people's time with basic questions.
You shouldn't forget that "there is no stupid question" goes right along with "you can tell more about a guy by his questions than his answers". If your question shows you've done your due diligence, you'll find this a great place. If your question shows that you're not willing to spend more time than it takes to type in a question, you will find this a very hostile place.
And if you continue with that tone, your time around here will be very limited. This is your once chance to adjust your attitude.. there won't be another one.

Honestly, all I did was ask for help with a question. Maybe it was the wrong place to ask. But I just didn't like the tone of your reply to my original post. Thats all. You have to admit (if you read your original reply to my query) it was totally unnecessary for you to put me down. That wasn't cool. Its cool you made this forum into what it is today. Its cool that a lot of knowledgeable people write stuff here. But hey, its the little guys that make the big guys big. So don't put me down. If you don't want to help, just walk away. But don't put me down.
But I wanted to leave it at that. Thats why I didn't say anymore. Until that melakai brought the whole thing up again. It was too much then.
If you wanted to send me to the noobs section, you could have done it in a million different ways. Think about it. Thats all. Subject closed. I am moving on. And oh, threatening to end my time in this forum... thats like kicking dirt in my face after I'm already down and out.

Doom9 team members could show a little more tolerance towards newbie questions. Even if sporic had not done his homework it is not a reason to be unpleasant or threaten him. Besides, I didn't see anything about BluRay in his question. Policing the forum in this way does not create a very constructive atmosphere. Most of us are here to learn from other more knowledgeable people who are kind enough to share their expertise with others.
@sporic: before your question came up, I wasn't sure whether WMV HD supported 1080p. I checked, and now I know it does:
Optimum Configuration
(to play 1080p video with 5.1 surround sound)
Windows XP
Windows Media Player 10
DirectX 9.0
3.0 GHz processor or equivalent
512 MB of RAM
128 MB video card
1920 x 1440 screen resolution
24-bit 96 kHz multichannel sound card
5.1 surround sound speaker system
Please bare in mind that you will also need a media server to stream the HD contents from your PC to your HTPC. Both Cyberlink PowerDVD and InterVideo WinDVD8 mention support for UPnP media servers but there isn't any information on their web sites as to how this works!

http://www.intervideo.com/WinDVD/WinDVD.jsp?mode=Features
Up to now, I also haven't found any media servers that will stream HD-DVD content, i.e. EVO files, which means you will first have to rip, demux and convert the HD-DVD contents to a file format supported by your HTPC, e.g. WMV HD. I was hoping Nero MediaHome would support this thanks to their HD-DVD plugin, but they don't.
@Doom9: this is a great forum, but it is not always easy to find the information one is looking for! I once read 50 pages of posts before I found what I was looking for. The hardest part was actually understanding the posts (which I still admit not to fully understand! There are geniuses here from another planet or maybe I'm a dumb ass!). Anyhow, I've been wondering, is it possible to add tags to posts to make the searching more efficient?

He referred to this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123744), where BD EVO is mentioned. Sometimes it gets annoying seeing the same questions reappear repeatedly, but it's bound to happen as long as guides haven't proliferated; this is why Doom9 doesn't normally police the newbies forum. =p
(With the unneeded hyperbole, the urge to mention the world's tiniest violin has been quite strong, though.)
Most forum members who've been here for very long will always recommend googling with site:forum.doom9.com unless you have very specific terms to find something. Vbulletin's searching is better than most forums, but that only means dark age instead of stone age. Nothing like tags exists for it, unless a new hack has recently showed up.

Feedback I've obtained from CyberLink:
"...please note that you can not use PowerDVD Ultra software as UPnP media server.
You can use it as UPnP client to play files from a UPnP media server.
However, we like to inform you that to resolve the issue you can use the CyberLink Media Deluxe (http://www.cyberlink.com/english/products/mediadeluxe/share.jsp) software."
