I need to make a backup copy of all of my DVD's to take with me when I deploy so I don't have to carry around my DVD's. I need to know what is the smallest format to rip to that allows me to click on the dvd and play it on my laptop. I want to save all of them to an external laptop hard drive.
:thanks:

Hello, and welcome to the forum,
The smallest won't be DVD at all, but, with still decent quality, AVI in my opinion. I'd recommend the use of AutoGK to convert the DVDs to AVI, in sizes of 1-2 CDs.

Thanks. I'll try that tonight and let you know how it goes!

before you can use AutoGK, which will convert the .vob's to .avi (xvid/divx), you need to rip the dvd.
download Ripit4me, install it and click on the download register.
there are 3 links to tools. download all 3.
then download autogk and install it.
now you have all the tools you need (5)
put the dvd in.
start up Ripit4me
click on 1-click
chose movie-only and let it rattle
this should take bout 20 mins or so. ripit4me will automatically
start the other tools. once it opens dvdshrink, its done and
you could burn a dvdcopy with dvdshrink.
now that you want to make an .avi out of it, open up autogk.
in agk open the ifo file (vts_01_0.ifo) in the folder ripit4me made (usually on the c: root).
tell agk where to save the file.
select xvid or divx (id use xvid)
select an audio mode (i always use 128kb cbr mp3)
add job
start
this should take around 2-3 hours. depends on your machine
and how long the movie is.
hope this helps :)

Thx FishTank......dunno if it helped the original poster but it sure helped me. I really appreciate the detailed instructions.
The only thing I did different is I ripped the DVD with DVDFab.
