29.97 fps 1080i HDTV sport material

I would like to encode this into 720p x264...

In the d2v file dgindex report it: 100.00% VIDEO
Megui (after analyzing the content) report it Interlaced, and gives me the following options:
- tdeint_edi
- tdeint
- leakkerneldeint
- tomsmocomp
- fielddeint
- fielddeint noblend

After encoding a 1 minute part with all of the above setting, tomsmocomp gives the smallest size (which means to me it's the best choice), 2nd is fielddeint.

So the quiestion is: am I right? And can I do something to retain the 23.976 fps or just do a the deinterlacing ...

Indeed. Let's see it.

However, you should realize that if your source is in fact pure interlaced, and not hard telecine (likely for sports material) - you will not want 23.976 fps :) This will result in chunky motion.

Cinema is usually shot at 23.976fps progressive, but sports and most programs are shot at 29.97 interlaced (in NTSC land anyway), to improve motion - because this means 59.94 pictures per second. Crucial to getting that smooth real-world look that sports require!

A word about deinterlacing, just because tomsmocomp gives you the smallest output size doesn't necessarily mean it's giving you the best picture :) It's a solid deinterlacer no doubt about it, but you may get sharper / more detailed results with other algorithms. Getting 59.94 half height frames down to 29.97 full size frames cleanly is tough, any way you look at it!

Let's see the sample though, and then I can say something that's not pure conjecture on my part :D

Yep Yep, it's definitely true 29.97 interlaced (TFF)

I tried some different Deinterlacers.. Tdeint, Tdeint(mode=2), tomsmocomp(1,15,1), and I found plain old Tdeint to be the most pleasing.

Not a very good source, I must say. You might want to deblock it, and clean it up with some denoising.

Looks pretty clean @ 720p though :)
