Hello,

I have a bunch of DV avi that I've encoded using x264 into an mkv container. Is there anyway to edit these encoded files? I've been using Premier to edit the raw DV captures, but can't seem to find a way to edit the video once it's been encoded. I'd really like to encode all of my home videos to save space, but I'm hesitant as losing the ability to edit the videos would be a problem

That's the way of things...

H.264 is very difficult to edit as are most highly compressed formats because they do not simply store each frame individually. Most frames use information from other frames to decode (to save space), and so if you cut the stream (edit), lots of other frames get messed up.

Some high end editors like Avid will edit H.264, but only when it comes from a camera that directly records in this format, because there are very strict limitations in how the stream must be encoded.

DV isn't THAT big, is it? ;)

Wish I had something better to tell you..
Keep the tapes, or get a 500 gig drive ($140 now)
