A question for Doom9. You say you got a Thomson DTH5000 DVD player ? I have a question. I can pick up one of these for £119 but my TV has only a co-axial arial socket. Do you know if you can plug the DVD player into a VCR (via scart), then the usual VCR to TV (co-ax), whether DVD will player properly and/or (S)VCD's will play ? Sometime in the future I'll get a new TV, but I thought the deal is unbeatable if only I can use it :confused: Many thanks if you can help. And great website, keep it up :)

your tv only has coax? throw it out of the window... geez.. when was the last time a tv with coax only input came out of a factory? 20 years ago?

and no.. your planned setup won't work because of macrovision.. the signal will be fine until the agc of the video recorder screws it up.

thanks. I always wondered what macrovision did. so it's fine to plug straight into tv but not vcr via scart. ok, guess time to dump the 28" monster soon.

actually.. if you got a VCR that is as old as your monitor it might work because very early models have no AGC.. but AGC has been pretty much mandatory for many years and only professional VCRs have manual gain control that would allow you to circumvent macrovision (btw... that is illegal under the dmca.. it contains provisions regarding macrovision as well).

unfortunately i had an old vcr but bined it a while ago (I actually had several, but most were disposed of when my parents moved... 'if only I know then what I know now...'). I'm getting a new thomson vcr probably on wednesday, so for now I'll have to keep watching the DVD's and VCD's on the PC (although a thermaltake orb fan isn't that quiet....)

You know, don't be so sure. I have a reltively new TV, a pretty big but low-quality one that has only RF input. Doom, you'd be surprised how technologically retarded average American TVs are. Anyway I have a pretty new VCR, and my DVD player's video goes to the VCR via composite video then to TV via antenna cable. Don't ask me how but it works fine, no sign of Macrovision anywhere. So you might as well try.
