Its known to cause problems with DVD-RB, use it at your risk.

Just to clarify... it is known to cause problems -- but not just with DVD-RB. It also has caused problems with some filters and encoders.

WOW, i have been using 2.57 for a while now.
Should I go back to 2.56 ???
The sourceforge download has 2.56a
Has 2.56a always been alpha, or is just the version number?

Thanks for your help in advance!

i am running with 2.57 and do not have problem. though off topic, which filters and encoders are incompatible with 2.57?

Do a search, there have been reports on Doom9. I've also had some reports of odd errors (but that were easily tracable to AVISYNTH) that went away when reverted to v2.5.6.

What I want to avoid is getting into criticism of AVISYNTH -- as I think it's very probably the most powerful video tool available anywhere (free or not). There just seems to be some problems with this latest release. It'll settle down after a while and be ok...

2.56 was released and shortly after 2.56a was released with some bug fixes.

2.56a is not for alpha

As far as i know, v2.57 only cause problems with the Restore24 script.

I'd appreciate if you tell us what other problems there are, since you are "warning" people about v2.57.

Unfortunately it seems random. The reports I've gotten are usually along the lines of:

- "Hey I got a black screen with red patterns but it started working when I went back to v2.5.6." (a sign of an encoder trying to encode an AVISYNTH error message)

- I got a couple of reports of DVD-RB reporting "Encoder doesn't appear to be functional" because the encoder was crashing... that also was reported to have gone away when reverting to v2.5.6.

- I got a report of CCE Basic crashing with "AVIFileInfo: error 80004005" -- reported to have been corrected by reverting to v2.5.6.

- I also understand SAPSTAR had to change some code in AutoQMatEnc to make it work with v2.5.7. More on that at this link (http://www.vmesquita.com/forum/index.php?topic=7877.0). Not sure whether his changes might show something.

I've gotten others... but I'd have to look back through my dvd-rb e-mails to find them -- the only thing that seems to be common is the fact that it goes away when they step back. Nothing scientific in the decision, I only make the recommendation based upon the empirical evidence. Sorry I can't be more help than that. My main concern is trying to keep DVD-RB running -- and it depends on AVISYNTH for filtering and decoding (via DGDECODE), so I'd rather be safe than sorry and recommend against upgrading yet.

1 thing I noticed with 2.5.7 (I've seen this in the last beta and the non-beta versions) is that pairing it with dvd-rb produces highly undersized files.

Usually when you get large undersizing it's an indicator that you may be encoding AVISYNTH error messages (the black/red I mentioned).
