I'd appreciate any suggestions for Media player/renderer combinations which use the least amount of CPU/GPU when playing avi video files. Thanx!

For low CPU usage I definitely recommend MPlayer plus DirectX/Overlay (default) renderer.

Or VideoLAN.
Actually,
I prefer VideoLan over any software, but very dissapoint with the latest one because cannot works in Vista. Even for play DVD also not work. Right now only wait for miracle to find any player that can play any codec in Vista. Even WM11 in my Vista also have bug problem that cannot play DVD also (not only AVI, Mpeg4 and others).

Just wanted to add another reply to the thread. Went ahead and tried out MPlayer. I used an installation package called SMPlayer. What a great program! Perfect solution for my low GPU laptop. It plays everything perfect, and the SMPlayer frontend has all the extras you need. Thanx again for your help!
