i haven't used HC encoder since 0.17. i was VERY happy with v0.17, and used it with DVD-RB Pro once in a while. i've just recently tried the newer versions but found that in soft backgrounds, it seems to be quite blocky. this isn't so much apparent in avi to mpeg2 encoding, but moreso when in use with DVD-RB. i've tried adjusting the VBR Bias which no luck. by soft backgrounds, i mean where there would be noticeable noise on say, background walls, smoke etc on the source, when encoded with HC, that noise on those soft backgrounds would turn into blocks.
is it just me? am i the only one who sees blockyness in soft backgrounds, and who prefers HC 0.17 over the newer versions? i actually REALLY like v0.17, better than CCE or any other encoder i've tried.
oddly enough, i only see the blockyness when played on my 20" CRT Tube TV, rather than my 32" LCD HDTV or even my 46" CRT RP HDTV. my little 20" is more prone to show blockyness and noise in movies.
