Why are the shape "lines" in animation on JL/JLU dvds jaggedy?

Okay, I wasn't sure where else to post this, but I'm noticing that when I play my dvds of Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, many of the black "lines" (like those outlining masks or faces, and especially the characters' lips) appear "jaggedy" and definitely not smooth. Other animation dvds don't seem to look like this. And when you pause the picture, none of the lines are smooth, they're all jaggedy.

Anyone know what the deal with this is? Thanks!

it could be a number of things...

perhaps it's a 16:9 disc and your DVD player is resizing it to letterboxed 4:3, causing diagonals to go a little stairsteppy?

or maybe it's had some sloppy editing that has caused it to be deinterlaced (which would give it jaggy lines). early family guy eps look like this because of slowed-down footage - things will shimmer intermittently.

or maybe it's come off film and they've used a telecine that aliases more than others?

a bit more information would help :) a short unprocessed VOB sample would help more.

Well, the Justice League discs for the first two seasons are 4:3 (the second season being in "letterbox" but it's a 4:3 letterbox, if you know what I mean). The Justice League Unlimited discs for the first two seasons of that show are 16:9 widescreen. And my tv is 4:3, so I'm sure my player is doing what you say in that case. BUT, it does it on all these discs. However, I've never noticed it on any others...

I don't have the means to post a sample... but I'm guessing/hoping someone around here has the discs (come on, it's Justice League! :) ) and can say if they notice the same thing (and/or perhaps post a sample, if they're willing).
