View Full Version : Haali Media Splitter and subtitles font name/size

When I play a movie handled by Haali, the subtitles are displayed using the font size and name defined in the file (?).
I would like to use my default VSFilter settings for subtitles. Is it possible ? How ?
I tried all settings but I just can't override these font parameters.
Thank you.

In MPC, if this is mkv/ogm you can do this by going into subtitles->styles... and changing it to your liking, but you'll have to do this manually every time. To my knowledge there's no way to override SSA/ASS the way there is for mp4 TTXT (a "plain text" option in that case). I'm not sure if it's possible to do it with the external VSFilter.

I'm sure it already worked before but I don't know how !
This behaviour occured when I installed last version.
From now, I can't get it work correctly.
How does subtitling work with Haali and VSFilter ? Where does the font name and size come from ?
Some of my files are subtitled with Times New Roman at very small size, others Comic bold at big size, etc ...
There's really no way to get rid of that ???

Font styles are stored in the file and are passed to the subtitler as is. My splitter is not involved in drawing subtitles in any way.

Thank you Haali. Now I understand.
Do you know if I can override the font settings in VSFilter ?
If not, do you know any subtitler able to do that ? ffdshow ?
The subtitles of one of my movies are really too small and I can't believe I can't do anything for that.

On the "Main: tab of vsfilter's configuration dialog. This is your font setting.

This is your font setting.
I set it to Arial. It works for external subtitles.
But embedded ones don't use this setting.
Don't know how to change this ...

What format are the subtitles in and how did you embed them?

Movie is in a MP4 container. The subtitles are Timed Text and mux was certainly made with mp4box.
I can't believe font size and name are forced. Is it really true ???
It's so stupid, as it seems I can't override ...

Well, I'm not an expert in ttxt but yes, I believe those elements are set in the subtitle script itself.

in ttxt the streamcreator can define how the subs should be displayed (font size, font type, color aso...), so its up to the filecreator to decide how things look like
whether the user is able to override this is up to the player. you could try other splitters or players, like gabest mp4 splitter or videolan

And VSFilter is unable to override this ???

Why is it up to the player ?? Why trying another splitter, as you said font settings are defined in the file ??
I've read that with Haali installed, the Gabest MP4 can't be used. Is that true ?
For now, I'm using ZP 4.51. The MP4 file is handled by Haali which uses VSFilter for subtitles.
Thank you.
EDIT: KMPlayer is doing well with its internal MP4 splitter and subtitler.
I would like to make it work with ZP now ...

If font size and color is set in .ssa, there is no way to change it during playback.
You can try VLC, i think it doesn't use fonts information from ssa.

I just registered Gabest MP4 splitter as bond recommend. And results are interesting.
The MP4 file has 2 subtitles tracks. But for each, I'm able to select plain text version.
So splitter offers 4 subtitles tracks. 2 with font settings and 2 without.
On these, VSFilter is able to set font as I defined. So it works now ;)
With Haali splitter, as he said, I can only cycle through subtitle tracks as file creator created them (?).
I would like to do this with Haali splitter because I can specify my favourite languages so I don't have to switch each time.

Is it working with subtitle track?

Well, this is an interesting thread. I am not sure how I missed this one. I guess it's the search string choices I used.
This is the problem I've been having. I know the reason why the subtitles are small, default is set to 18 (though on playback, that's way smaller than an 18 point font, plus they are kind of bluring into the white), but I didn't know this because when I was creating the mp4s, I just let yamb create a default ttxt file. Plus they played fine at the time. I see that gabest's allows for 4 streams, where a plain text one is selectable. This is what I used to have apparently with haali's splitter. It didn't display the ttxt files, but plain text versions. I don't quite understand how it changed from before, but it did. Is there a way to fix this short of converting all my mp4s to mkv with srt or using another splitter? I like haali's splitter a lot and I always liked mp4 due to the fact my computer handles it better than mkv. And I use zoom player like the guy that started this thread.

You could use an external srt file with the same filename in the same directory (ie myfile.mp4 + myfile.srt) and vsfilter should autoload the same as muxing the srt into a mkv.

Yeah, I'm aware of that, but I didn't want the hassle of having a separate subtitle file. That was the nice thing about a container that can add stuff. *sigh* I guess I'll just have to figure out how to batch convert all my mp4s to mkvs. Thanks for your help.
