I am a newby here and just learning Virtualdub. Is there a simple way or even a special filter to resize an avi wide screen so show as full screen on a regular monitor?

If you're talking about simple playback, use ffdshow to either crop the sides of the video or to stretch it to fill the screen. If you're referring to encoding it, it's just a matter of resizing it to your needs during the encode. It's not done through filters.

I beg to differ - when I use VirtualDub to resize an AVI, I apply the built-in "resize" filter.
If you want to display a widescreen picture as full screen, but you want to maintain the correct aspect ratio, you actually need to crop the sides, not resize. If you just want to stretch the picture on playback, I'd recommend using Zoom Player, which I believe will do that.
