Create a clear picture?

Hi there,

Im no pro when it somes to video editing, but was hoping someone could help. My situation is: Im recording NTSC VHS Tapes to my computer and then converting to PAL because the video standard in Australia is PAL. Im wanting to use filters to remove noise, colour correction ect. and after burn to dvd. Theres a problem i cant seem to overcome: Its that when there is movement in the picture, you can see vertical lines. I think the process to remove it is to De-interlaceing? I've been mucking around with filters with Virtual Dub, but cant get a good result.

To record the video, Im using a Pinnacle 310i HDTV TV Tuner.
For Audio, Realtek 97' Line in.

Interlacing results in horizontal combing lines not vertical ones, so it is hard to make sense of your post. Can you post a link to a small unprocessed sample clip with a lot of motion? Failing that, a screenshot of an unprocessed frame with motion.

Yes, that is interlacing. But the big problem is that the picture has a lot of noise that looks like combing, so the deinterlacer will get confused. You need to clean up your capture method. Are you using composite or S-Video?

use avisynth and throw dedot or tcomb at it to remove the crawlies before you try deinterlacing as neuron2 said. that will prevent most of the confusion that a motion-adaptive deinterlacer will suffer.

i'd also be inclined to back it up in NTSC.

also, remember that although Australia is PAL land, we're not so backward that our TVs, VCRs and DVD players don't support NTSC natively (too bad it isn't the same for NTSC countries :devil: ). so you could fairly safely keep everything in interlaced NTSC if you're archiving this stuff.

in fact some DVDs in stores now are just re-badged NTSC discs with modified cover art (ie. the fugly OFLC warnings taking up more space than the mouth cancer panels on cigarette packs).

@ Neuron2 Im using composite as that is the only output of the VCR machine.

The machine itself wasn't cheap at the time ($300+) back in 2000, so the its not junk (Hitachi). Though, the tapes are about 17 years old :eek: . Ill try those those commands you suggested in avisynth, hopefully it'll give me a better picture :) . If there something else I should be doing, let me know. Thanks, Joe.

Looks more like a crappy capture card.

Maybe just a wrong driver. I have a Philips SAA7134 capture card and if i use the wrong driver (LifeView for example) i also get those "dot crawls" everywhere.

Depending on your capture card chip (Brooktree Conexant or Philips) i recommend trying either 'philips reference driver (http://members.home.nl/fly2000/download_e.html)' or 'BTwincap (http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/)'.

Are you sure it isn't a grounding problem?
