Video editing/rendering causing comptuter to restart.

Okay so this just started happening recently to my computer. Any time I do any sort of video editing(encoding, transcoding, etc) my computer will either just quit the program or it will completely reboot.

Example of the programs I've tried: DivX Converter, Ulead DVD MovieFactory, TMPGEnc DVD Author and Virtualdub.


Any thoughts what it might be causing it to do so? Everything is up to date on my computer as far drivers, etc. and like I said, it's just started happening recently. Even did a complete new install and it's still having problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dust Bunnies. Encoding makes the CPU run 100% and it overheats. Clean the fans and heatsinks and you should be good.

It could also be due to bad RAM. Run "MEMTest" or similar...

So I ran Memtest and it came up with no errors. I also checked the temps and voltage readings and they were all normal.

Also ran the hard drive diagnostic tool that comes with WinXP and it came up with no problems.

Not sure what's going on. I wouldn't be surprised if it was my power supply, but it's a fairly new one. Maybe a year and a half old or so.

If I had the money I'd just upgrade but that's kind of hard being a poor college student,haha.

Wow, whole rash of these lately. Might be a driver issue. Is the rendering gpu assisted at all, to your knowledge? Could be a video card overheating, or just its driver returning garbage data.

Read carefully though, you will have to restart it manually from now on.

You should be able to see something when error occurs. Eg. IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

Check your event logs (Start - Run - eventvwr.msc, tab System for System Error in the Source column.)
