Could someone please tell me why my dvd vob files are being encoded to 23.976fps and not 29.97?
There doesn't seem to be a setting for that. Am I missing something?

Hello and welcome to the forum,
Am I missing something?
Yes. AutoGK analyzes the file and encodes it at the original framerate. Don't they play nice and smoothly, those 23.97fps AVIs? Well, if they were kept at 29.97fps, they wouldn't. Actually, there is a setting to make them 29.97fps, but I'm not going to tell you how to do it, as you'd just screw it up. Until you know a bit more, let AutoGK handle setting the framerate.

Thank you for the response manono, well they play ok..but I have the same avi in 29.97fps and it looks like it plays smoother...but I forgot what I encoded it with, I might of converted it with jetaudio...but it plays smooth.
Also I went to those setting when you push control and f9 but at the top right side theres something about framerate but when I check on 29fps and then I go back to look at those settings it's back at 23fps??
Another thing when I play the vob in jetaudio it tells me it's at 29.97fps??
By the way the movie is "invincible"...not sure if that helps..

Hi-
Movies are 24fps, right? Even Invincible is 24fps in the movie theater, right? All NTSC DVDs have to output at 29.97fps (actually 59.94 fields per second). That's the DVD spec. So, to go from 24fps in the theater to 29.97fps on DVD, a combination of 3:2 Pulldown (more properly called 2:3 pulldown, since that's what it usually is) and the Drop-Frame flag are used. Here, read this:
http://www.doom9.org/synch.htm
But you don't have to output 29.97fps for AVI. You can return it to its original and correct framerate. Are you saying you did the same movie using this jetaudio? And it plays more smoothly at 29.97fps? Do me a favor. Open your 29.97fps version in VDubMod, scroll to a place with movement/action, and start advancing a frame at a time. Do you see anything unusual? If I'm correct, in every five frame sequence you'll see either a duplicate frame, or you'll see 2 blurry/blended frames, depending on how it was deinterlaced. Now play it in a player and find a place with a slow pan or someone walking, or a camera moving slowly. Pay attention and you should be able to see either the jerkiness from the duplicate frames, or a kind of "strobing" from the blurry frames.
For NTSC movies, 23.976fps is the proper framerate, and 29.97fps is just plain wrong. Not to mention the fact that you're encoding 25% more frames than necessary, wasting valuable bits, and giving your movie a much lower quality for the same file size (1 CD, 2 CD, 1/4 of a DVDR, whatever).

Wow...thanks manono, you don't know how lucky I feel about you telling me this...So many times I'd ask questions in forums like this and I'd never get a response...thank you for helping me...man If I knew you personally I'd be asking you questions about video converting constantly...for I find it very interesting and fun to convert movies and stuff.
While I'm here maybe you could help me on this other problem I can't seem to find out anywhere...ok..well when I use jetaudio to convert to divx...(I have divx pro and you can use it in jetaudio coverting window) well when I convert vobs with it the audio is really quiet but when I use other converters the audio is loud like it should be (I'm using it on a 2 channel setup). Even when I play the vob through the jetaudio player it is quiet....Do you have any idea why this is???Why is the file so quiet when I use Jetaudio to play it or the converted files quiet when I play them?? The reason I ask is I have a pmp that the some videos have to be converted and jetaudio is the converter used for the pmp. And when I play the converted files on the pmp I have to turn the volume all the way up just to be able to hear it ok...but when I use other converters on the same vob files the audio is perfect.
It's almost like maybe jetaudio is somehow just converting the 5 channel sound and you have to turn it all the way up to hear the voices.....
An I missing something again?
And I have another question maybe you can help me with I download these things called "gordian knot codec pack" and "Gordian knot rip pack" but I didn't install them...I started to but it's asking me about all these codecs if I want to install them with it and I think I have some of them...am I supposed to install them anyway even if I already have them...and if I have them already but don't install them with the rip pack will the program still work if there not installed with the program?? And one of them is a trial of divx pro but I have divx pro..should I uncheck it?? And the other codecs how am I supposed to know if I have them or not so how am I supposed to know if I should uncheck them?
Anyway I thought maybe that program would save me some time because maybe I could rip right to my pmps resolution?
I hope you can help me I'd really like the jetaudio problem resolved...but I understand if you can't help me.
Thanks again..

Hi-
well when I convert vobs with it the audio is really quiet but when I use other converters the audio is loud like it should be
An educated guess says the quiet ones use AC3 audio and the louder ones use MP3. Either that or the quiet ones use unnormalized MP3. To check, open them in GSpot and get the type of audio. If AC3, if you're using the AC3Filter, boost the volume. If you're not using it, get it and install it:
http://ac3filter.net/
Since you're using AutoGK, you may already have the Ac3Filter installed, not sure. In the AC3Filter Config, set the Preset to Loud. Or play with the sliders. If it's MP3 audio, you can make it louder using MP3Gain:
http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/
You'll have to demux the audio to run it through MP3Gain. And then remux. And be careful; unless you do it right, you're liable to get distortion from making it too loud.
I don't know anything about jetaudio or PMP. I'm sure other people here do.
am I supposed to install them anyway even if I already have them
You probably don't need them, since you already have AutoGK installed, and it provides you with most of the codecs you'll need. Plus, you already have DivX Pro. Yes, Gordian Knot will still work. As long as you have the right codecs, it doesn't care if you got them from the Codec Pack or elsewhere.

Thank You so much manono, it really helped me...I went into the ac3 filter settings and put the preset to "loud" and that seemed to fix the quiet audio from jetaudio's player and converter. I'm so glad I came to this forum and found you.
But maybe you can answer a few more I guess noob questions..??
When I use AutoGK to encode video for my hand held media player I use the divx setting and set it for a fixed width of 320 that way it's compatible with my hand held....and I set the target quality to 100%....is there anyway to get even better quality for 320 width?? I'm not concerned with file size.
I noticed that it's only doing single pass encoding?? Why isn't it doing 2 passes?? Is there a way to make it do 2 pass?? I really want the best quality I can get for 320 width.
And one more thing...When I use AutoGK and the Divx setting...Is it using my Divx Pro or some other older Divx version??
Again Thank You very much for all your experience in this field.

Target quality is always single pass. You may not be concerned with file size, but the only way AutoGK will do 2-pass encodes is if you specify a file size. With some encodes under your belt, you'll get a feel for what file size you need to specify to get a good output in reference to the file length.
