hi

really nice guide indeed...
Have to say that autorun menu looks very cool, ill definetly use that in my future rips :) :) :)
And wow that guy is writing 866Mb on one cd...think i'll ask some 99min cd's too for my newyear-presents ;)
i only made a few rips yet using doom9's guide of gnot+nandub
and have to say they turned out quite well
so i'd like to have the comment of some experts on this before i'd use the settings explained in this guide
is it better using:
* YUV 4:2:2 in DVD2AVI? (i always used the standard setting i guess that is rgb)
* changing TemporalSmoother(2,1) to: TemporalSmoother(3)? (is it better using such filter anyway, or does it depends on quality of movie?)
* Also is it really better using codec 4.11 instead of 3.11 for resolutions as 720xXXX or 704xXXX? (think i read that somewhere on this forum)

thanx and best wishes for 2002

Thanks for your comments, there will be further improvements the next few days hopefully.

Before you buy 99min CDs, make sure your CD-R can burn them. Check the link i provide in my guide.

* We use YUV 4:2:2 instead of RGB because it is faster.
* Using the TemporalSmoother to a level of 3, increases the compressability of the movie. It removes noice and little details that stress the codec. You can't tell the difference for sure. A default of 3 is good for all movies.
* I would never encode a movie at 720xXXX you must crop it to 704 at all costs ;) DivX 4.11 can handle better than DivX 3.11 NOT resized movies. 704xXXX does not resize width, just crops.

Hope it helps

thanks for ure reply,
the next rip i do, it will sure be with ure settings :)
the file for autorun-menu is kinda big, together with 4.12 codec its already getting over 1Mb...did u compile it ureself? perhaps u could make a version without the "install codec 4.12"-button, or just place a link to divx.com for dl'ing it.
Sorry if it sounds silly complaining about 1Mb these times:o
but the more place there is for the movie the better it gets...:):p:D
Also would be nice if u could use other names than just movie.avi for ure movie and put the filename in the ini-file...

1mb is not a stress for you because most of the times i get undersized files for 5-10megs. Don't worry too much. It's nice to have rips that your friends can use.

It's not my program, i can't remember the url right now. You can change the filename of the avi in the ini. Just make sure the actual filename kai the setting in the ini is the same. i.e. Shangai noon.avi (same for the ini and the filename)

A few question to make sure I followed the DivX4 guide correctly,

When the divx.log file is created and you make the adjustments usings DivX 4 log program, do you save it as the same file or rename? When you start the second pass you select the same file from the first pass. How does that changes from altering the divx.log file effect the second pass? When I finished the process, all I got was the sound and a green screen when playing the movie back!

Any help for this newbie is greatly appreciated.

Save it as a different file e.g. 2ndpass.log because you might need the old divx.log later on. When you do the second pass, set bitrate as Gknot says, and select the 2ndpass.log as the logfile.

To answer the last question you need some background info on the divx4. What the first pass does is, it scans the video stream and writes down how complex each frame is and if it contains high or low motion. In the second pass it restributes quantizers 2-12 so that it will achieve your desired bitrate. What divx4log does is change the logfile in a way that the codec will use the quantizers you set and not the default 2-12.

Green screen and sound? Hm it sounds like you got the video file from the first pass. During the first pass, divx4 dumps a video file which black/green, i havent understand its use yet. In the second pass just replace that one by saving the avi in the same file....

Hope it helps, let me know..

Did you have a look to analyse.log?
If you do , then you will notice that all the nice work and efforts of Dmitry are useless since Quantizer's limits are not respected
(Take a look at KF quantizer or try to put equal min and max to DF quantizer)

Of course nice Dmitry's prog is not the problem . The problem is the bad way Divx4 makes the 2nd pass..

Funny, in an analyse.log i don't get quantizers higher or lower that the ones i set....

I can post it somewhere...

humm, look at the KF quantizer, did you get Quantizer equal to 2?
I don't think so..
Try Q min of 4 and Q max of 4 by ex for DF
Did you get Quantizer equal to 4?
I don't think so..

If i'm wrong, i will be happy to see your logs..
