View Full Version : How do you reencode the audio?

I have an Oppo 971 player and there are some Divx files that will not play the audio portion. Gspot shows it to be VBR, but some VBRs do play on this machine. Is there a way to rencode just the audio to something that my Oppo will accept? I check the FAQ in VirtualDubMod and it said something about an Audio menu, but I have the latest VDM and it has no audio menu. Anyway any help, and please with some detail, since I'm new to this procedure would would be appreciated. Another thought may be that the header is screwed up, maybe all I need to do is demux and then remux, but I don't know how. TIA

Hi!I have the latest VDM and it has no audio menu.By "VDM", I presume you mean VirtualDubMOD, which is a different (though related) program than the standard VirtualDub.
In VirtualDubMOD, you'll find the audio under the "Streams" dropdown menu...

Not in my VDM. Under Stream it has Video Component, video chapters, stream list, report and error mode.

I guess you lack the curiosity to click on the "Stream list"...

Ok I see it, but like I said in my first post , I've never done this procedure before, how about some detail other then click on "stream list" ... not exactly close to any detail. Do I save a wav or demux, then do I resample the audio through nero and make it CBR? Then how do I recombine video to new stream? Will it synch? I need more then a click on comment... I.m asking nicely ... please .....

Especially since you say that, "but some VBRs do play on this machine", before assuming that the audiostream is the cause of your playback problem, would you please be good enough to post a screencapture of the GSpot display of one of the problematic videos?...

Bitrate might be too high. Try encoding the audio with peaks at 192, 224, or 256. (The -b parameter is minimum, -B is maximum.) The only obvious difference is that the bitrate of the working one is much lower, but there could be some issues like strict iso conformance that aren't obvious.
In general, re-encoding audio won't give you any sync problems, so it's a lot faster than re-ripping or re-capturing.
In the streams menu, you should demux the audio. Import it into foobar or another transcoder, edit the commandline with constrained bitrate params. You might have to convert it to an intermediate wav first, depends on the program. Then import the new one back into vdubmod, double-click the old one to disable it, and resave with direct stream copy.

Differences between the one working .AVI and the two non-working .AVIs are almost too many to list:
1) You created the one that works properly using VirtualDubMOD and XviD v.1.0.2. Therefore, it's hard to understand how you would not know how to access the audiostreams in VirtualDubMOD.
The two that don't work properly were created using NanDub and XviD v.1.0.3
2) You created the one that works properly with two monaural audio channels.
The two that don't work properly were created with Joint Stereo.
3) You created the one that works properly with a video/audio interleave of every frame.
The two that don't work were created with an interleave of every 96 milleseconds.

Gordian Knot and AGK drive vdmod in the background, minimal or no user interaction required.

To find out if the interleave is the problem, or anything relating to (ugh) Nandub's mux, try just remuxing with direct stream copy in virtualdub or avi-mux gui. Nandub sometimes does evil things to avi.

Well I was correct and luckily foxyshadis gave me the easy directions in how to demux the audio and I just resampled it with Nero's encoder at CBR 160 stereo and added it back and disable original and saved to DVD and it plays just fine now with no sync problems. I knew it was the audio that was the problem and your (foxyshadis) directions were great. It wasn't that hard to resample an audio track and add it back in .. just needed someone to give me the 4 steps in doing so. Thanks again.
Oh you (setarip) assumed I made the xvids ... I didn't.
