View Full Version : Distributed encoding

Just a quick question, would it be feasible to have a wrapper to distribute encoding over the network for any or all encoders supported by DVD Rebuilder? Or does this functionality already exist?
I would have thought this capability would have made it into more mainstream programs by now, dvd::rip has had it for a while http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/doc/cluster.cipp and it is an expected feature for many video editing programs.
edit: Hmmm, looking around at info on RB farm at the moment ...

There is a link to the RB Farm thread in the Overview sticky, the original download link doesn't work but the last post in the thread links to Rockas' site, which is hosting the file.
It hasn't been updated in some time, I don't know if it is still compatible with DVD-RB, and only worked with certain versions of CCE (it may also work with EclPro since it was originally designed to mimic CCE for use DVD-RB before it was officially supported.)

It's feasible -- and in fact when I added the "multiple encoder processes" feature I built it in a way that would support that concept. But the truth is -- there just doesn't seem to be much demand for it.

I would love it. I could then use the two computers here to their full extent.

Sometimes i think it would be nice to have such a feature.
At moment am looking around and see:
my pc: Core2Duo 2,6 GHz
my bro's pc: Athlon64 X2 2,6 GHz
my mum's pc: P4 3GHz
my dad's pc: Athlon64 3200+
room below:
Mediacenter pc Athlon64 X2 3800+ (with MediaPortal)
and somewhere around:
old Laptop with P4 2,6 GHz.
Ok, they are not allways on at the same time, even if it could be good in winter to heat the house,
but if there were such an option in DVD-RB (maybe as a nt-service for the other pc's), i would use it to encode my dvd's in best possible quality, regardless of speed.

I'd use this feature too ...

Ditto here. I have 2 slow computers, so a distributed feature would really cut down on these excruciating 500-minute encode times :p

I would actually love this feature. I have 3 computers I use as encoding station (I currently use the Pro version). I'm sure if you include this feature into the Pro version, people will sure to be interested in paying to upgrade ;)

Heck, I'd even do some Bootcamp action on my two Macs to help my CoreDuo based XP laptop with the encodes.

Chalk up another one for a willing LAN based multiple pc encoding user. Recently discovered RBFarm and use it whenever possible. Would love to find a program to allow me to use them as a group with CCE for soon to be converted to dvd material that is not feedable to DVDRB-Pro, like vid captures and other sources.
Cheers,

3 years ago, this was really needed, and i did use RBFarm a lot,
but now, i have to say is it really needed, with hardware booming so much, Dual core systems so cheap, would it be praticle to utilize network, on my dual core i get a speed of 5.28 speed in CCE, a job for me is done in like 24minutes,
now network support on Mpeg 4 footage, now we would be talking, that would be cool as mpeg 4 encoding is so slow (ASP not bad slow but not bad, but AVC, seriously need distribution), but getting of topic, as that is irrelevant here,
i suppose for people that had many batch jobs to do, i can see where this would be needed, but it's the practicality of doing this this way, when dual core systems are nearly in everyone's reach these days, nearly, whole new systems can be had for £250 now, jesus, even children saving there pocket money could have a new PC on 6-9 months,
hehehe
i suppose it comes down to Jdoobs, how busy is he, and could he implement RBFarm some how, as this would save you a lot of time, and if Jdoobs is planing on getting into Mpeg4 (advisable giving the fact that this is the future) then perhaps that would be the main reason to implement this idea,
as mpeg 4 encoding is still so slow, even on Quad Cores, not that impressive speed, AVC is just so computational,
