PowerDVD 7.3 HD-DVD blows blu-ray away?

Been testing out powerdvd ultra 7.3.

I have 2 blu-ray movies.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (MPEG type)
X-Men The Last Stand (AVC type)

And i have a bunch of HD-DVDs king kong, riddick etc.

When i play HD-DVD the picture is smooth, perfect.

When i play blu-ray i notice background noise/a bit pixlated (dunno if its the correct saying). Goes for both of the blu-rays.

To my eyes HD-DVD is superior. Is something wrong or is this the case?

Probably because most blu-ray movies are encoded in mpeg2 compared to h.264/vc1 for hd-dvd.

I noticed the same thing

Bluray looks really grainy.

The last HD-DVD I´ve seen looked also a little grainy but only in some dark areas. Constantine HD.

Neither of those two BD movies are good for comparisons. Try comparing Kingdom of Heaven.

Isn't that just film grain...?

In the digital era people no longer seem to like film grain. If it's not smoothed to death and made shiny and glossy, it's not good. Needs more CG. Digital crispness and vibrant colors, yay !

However, I have no idea how those two films look like, that's just a general observation.

X-men almost looks as bad a VHS, even the regular DVD9 has less grain
