I bought some dual layer dvds and neither of my standalone players will play them. Everything is good up to the menu, but if I try to select things like options or scene selection, the screen just freezes and then the dvd player says "stop". The movies play fine on the computer dvd player though. I'm guessing my standalone player just isn't good enough, but on this site: http://www.dvddemystified.com/myths.html, it says all dvd video players are required to play dual layer discs. So, do you think it's my player, or something else? If it's my player, does anyone know any cheap players that will play dual layer discs?

Hi!I bought some dual layer dvds and neither of my standalone players will play them.Your statement is unclear to me.

Did you buy commercial, pressed DVDs (gold or silver undersides), or did you buy something else (purple underside)?

If your DVDs are commercial, pressed DVDs, what are their Titles and Region(s)?

Or are you talking about double-layer media that YOU burned?

Hi. They were ones I burned with purple under them. They were verbatim dvd +r dl. On both of my standalone players, I can't select any menu options or else the screen freezes and the player says "stop" a few seconds later. So, I'm thinking I need a different player. Do you know any cheap dvd players that will play these verbatim dl discs?

Before you run out to buy a new player, please describe the software and procedures you used to burn this D/L media. The movies play fine on the computer dvd player though.Do the burned DVDs play on your PC?

What is the brand and model number of your burner?

Hi. I did just buy a new player, same thing. The movies play, but I can't select things on the menu without them freezing or stopping like "scene selection". The 3 dvd players are

Philips DVD 580M
Magnavox MWD200GA
Durabrand DVD-1002

The burned dvds play fine on the computer burner. It's an LG GSA-H42N. I used Nero 7. I set the booktype to dvd-rom before burning each. That last dvd player I found on this large list where people stated dvd +r dl did work. So, I am not going to buy another dvd player before I figure out what the real problem is. Again, the movies will play, but I can't select the menu options without freezing or stopping. Any ideas?

Try using (freeware) IMGBurn instead of NERO.

There have been posts by others indicating that NERO doesn't properly burn D/L media (doesn't deal with layerbreak properly)...

Ok, in this IMG burn, should I still do that set the booktype thing to dvd-rom? Also, my burner is an LG, and I see a tab for that, but IMG burn calls it HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H42N RL00 (D:). So, I want to make sure by changing the LG tab, it's in agreeance with what IMGburn thinks my burner is. Ok, last question: the dvd files are first put into the dvd folder structure using a program called clonedvd. To use this imgburn, should I just put those 2 folders audio_ts and video_ts into an iso then burn with imgburn?

should I still do that set the booktype thing to dvd-rom?Yes, you should

should I just put those 2 folders audio_ts and video_ts into an iso then burn with imgburn? No, that's not necessary. select the "Build" mode from the "Mode" dropdown menu - and select the "VIDEO_TS" folder...

Hey, dude, one more thing. Could this IMGBurn be a replacement for clonedvd? The reason I ask is that I know clonedvd is doing some other things like removing macrovision protection and region stuff. Is IMGBurn doing these things?

It worked, dude! Thanks! You're quite welcome, dude ;>}Is IMGBurn doing these things?Nope, IMGBurn is a burning tool only, with no decrypting capability...
