Play HDDVD W/ Media Player

If a disc is ripped to the Harddrive, is it possible to extract the video and audio into a file like mkv as is (not re-encoding it) and just play that file in say media player?

I know there would be no Menu support but I could care less about anything other than the video/audio/and subtitles.

I'm trying to learn and would like to know if this is currently a possibility.
