View Full Version : Game-videos with HDTV resolutions..

I've tried searching the forums a bit without luck, so I'm posting in hopes of an enlightening answer..

I finally got myself a nice big widescreen monitor capable of displaying 1920x1200 resolution, and I've been thinking about doing some in-game footage in HD-resolution (was thinking 1080p).

But since HD is kinda new to me (been doing DVD-rips for years, but I've been slacking on the HD-stuff), I'm kinda confused about the different framerates offered with HD-material..

There used to be 25fps and 29.97fps, but from what I understand, HD can be 24, 50 and 60fps, but what resolutions offer what frame-rates, and in what image-mode (interlaced/progressive).

A quick test at 1080p 50fps uncompressed video with PCM sound ended up at about 2.16GiB per minute of video, which is a bit on the large side.. So to sum it up, I'm really after a way to get good quality material without running out of disk-space after 10 minutes and still comply with HDTV specs.

you'll have to capture compressed. i can't see a way to do that either (unless you hack a HDV camera to accept DVI).

or just cap to 25 fps and double your recording time.

Ok, I guess I should have mentioned that I'll be using FRAPS (http://www.beepa.com) to capture the material (I didn't say because I don't know how this forum is about "advertising" for commercial capture-solutions).

FRAPS will let me capture at whatever framerate I want, so that's not the problem, the problem is that I'd like to capture at a low FPS (for filesize) that would still gives a good viewing experience on a 1080p TV, and still be compliant with the HDTV standards.

For example, capturing at 1080p 24fps would give the smallest source-file, but what good would that be if 1080p only takes 50 or 60fps?

After the source is captured, I'll be compressing it with x.264 to shrink it further.

24p, 25p, 30p, 50i, 60i, 50p, and 60p are all part of HDTV. (You can think of the i as being 25 or 50, same thing.) Aim for an integer multiple of your source rate to prevent judder, if possible. Even better if you can render directly to a framerate.

Technically you can also telecine anything from 20 to 30 to 60i, but if it's not 24p you probably won't get progressive playback capability out of standalones.

(Of course these round NTSC numbers are just conveniences. There's both 24p and 23.976p, oddly enough.)
