Did you post the keys that weren't in the included DB?

Also, how did you play the movies afterwards seeing as WinDVD refuses to play a HD DVD folder from your HD and that the HD version also doesn't open EVOs (and the regular version opens them but does nothing useful with them)?

SURELY :)
The Troja EUR, BABEL US, Constantine EUR in the list are from my source.

WinDVD is imo real shit. It hangs on my sys. (even on a fresh XP) for about 3mins, then plays but won't play Backups.

PDVD 6.5 won't work with my 8800GTX.
So PDVD7.1 is my choice and a great one , too. Really good picture and it really plays it all. The only minus is the Subtitle bug. (You have to turn out subs via menue cause it always starts with subs)

But besides this it works on all the above mentioned films. Without any probs. And since Gui 1.3 even with menues, such a great program.

Does PowerDVD 7.1 actually play backed up folders? I thought it didn't. And what's your video configuration like? Analog or DVI and if the latter, with or without HDCP (screen and GFX card)?

Yes, it does.
My problem is (with 7.1) no direct play from HD DVD drive (xbox360 add on) even on my HDCP compatible projector.
But anydvd hd solve this.

Well some of my HD DVD titles will hang?loop when I
select the root folder for my movie,
I have to manually select the main evo files to play.
Other HD DVD title will play fine , I just have to
let PowerDVD cycle throught to the main movie.
If I play the movie with the Xbox 360 player I
can select menu options with the keyboard only.
Digital connection from 8800GTX to Dell 2407 Monitor
system passes the cyberlink check program.

As far as resolution, how would I check my output
with PowerDVD 7.1 ultra. It doesn't show in the info bar?

Pelican9

And is that playback at 1080p? I only get downscaled junk from PowerDVD 7.1. Only 6.5 plays at 1080p but it can't handle a lot of titles (T3 ripped = nogo, with AnyDVD HD and selecting a title manually you can play it, Poseidon is a nogo with and without AnyDVD HD and also ripped with BackupHDDVD, and it can't seem to handly any Universal EU title I have: the Fast & Furious trilogy and Doom).

Come to think of it, yes PowerDVD plays ripped discs just fine.. but at the same resolution you'd get with ICT: 950x560 .. and I paid for 1920x1080. While PowerDVD doesn't show the actual resolution, the window size can easily be measured, and WinDVD 8 is as honest as to tell you it's downscaling.. in its info window, the resolution is always way below what it should be.. especially when it's then being upscaled again to whatever resolution you might have (I have 2560x1600) - you lose a considerable part of the bonus HD DVD is supposed to deliver.

No, the resolution is 1080p without any degradation.

Pelican9: how about if you play it back on a PC flatscreen via DVI but without HDCP? And how do you figure it's 1080p? I went ahead and measured the size of the video window while PowerDVD is in windowed mode.. and it's definitely downscaled and a far cry from what PowerDVD 6.5 does in windowed mode.

PDVD 6.5 does not play V for Vendetta for me from anywhere, with or without AnyDVD HD. Does not play ripped HD DVD. Does not play EVO files. Finally does not play the original HD DVD from the Xbox HD DVD drive.
The rest of my titles (KK, Waterworld, Riddick, Pitch Black, Fantom of the Opera, Dune) are just fine.

PDVD 7.1 plays V for Vendetta no problem on the 1280x720 laptop, not sure whether it is downscaling it, I don't have 7.1 on my 1080p output devices (HTPCs, 2 of them) since 7.1 does not consider my Samsung 67" good enough for HDCP. I can play thru VGA rather than DVI-HDMI, but I don't want too..

Is it me or is it 6.5?

Hi there, Folks.
Well I am asking myself if there are many of you guys using Olegs BackupHDDVD-GUI (Java Vers.) I successfully used the 1.3 version on every movie I got so far.
Here's a small list:
- KingKong EUR
- Serenity EUR
- 12Monkeys
- Fear & Loathing
- Batman Begins
- Pitch Black
- Chronicles of Riddick
- Babel
- Spartacus
- The Mummy
- Aeon Flux
- Superman Returns
- Lucky #Slevin
- Miami Vide
- Vendetta
- Red Dragon
- Syriana EUR
- Harry Potter IV
- Troja EUR
- Constantine EUR
(Downfall & Running Scared do not have AACS protection, just copy them to the HDD and run)

It worked like a charm, including the menue.
A few keys wasn't found online, so I got them myself w/ WinDVD8 and the Keyfinder GUI.

All in all I have to say that the BackupHDDVD Gui is an excellent piece of work and I higly recommend it!

Try it for yourself if you didn't and all the probs in ripping are gone.

Thank you again to Olegg and much fun in watching the Hds, it's such a cool thing when you're in possession of a Full HD LCD!!! (By the way: I recommend my Amoi LCD 42" w/ 1080p Full HD. It's cheap (1450Euro) and kicks ass with my PC)

Best regards,
Cap

Oleg did a good job no questions about this. But for some reason I cannot make Java work on my testing/ripping laptop anymore.

I use Emon's C# version which does not require Java and love it too..well, almost :D

Are you sure PowerDVD scales the video down? Everytime i start it up, its window is something like 760x500 big, but that does not mean that this is the decoding resolution. For a comparison, i played back a file with WinDVD 8 NON-HD version (That thing that looks like Vista. Funny, it says it supports VC-1 and no DD+, but when i play back an EVO i get a black screen with DD+ playing. Demuxing the VC-1 and playing back the raw stream works). Comparing the pictures in fullscreen doesn't show a visible difference. I made a screenie with WinDVD, scaled it down and up again, it was not easy to see a difference but the scaled version looks a bit blurrier. Btw, i have the same display but a HDCP-capable GFX-Card (NVidia 7950GT), i've read here somewhee that PDVD might check the GFX-Card for HDCP, maybe because of that i don't see a difference?

Gee, seems that a few of you still got probs on this.

Again I have 2 say that in my case PDVD 7.1 plays the Backups without probs and surely in 1080p. All of the HDs titles I mentioned and all of them thanks to the Gui w/ working menue.

Yesterday I saw Red Dragon, was one of the sharp ones. And hell of a good movie. I love Edward Norton, he's a genius in acting.

I haven't made a side by side comparison but I'd be highly surprised if at my screen resolution the software would automatically downscale content in windowed mode, and I have the distinct impression that playing via PowerDVD 7.1 is a bit blurrier than playing with PowerDVD 6.5.
And WinDVD 8 HD doesn't even bother to hide the fact ththe 9xx whatever resolution.
When you play the demuxed raw stream in WinDVD 8 standard, what does the info window tell you about the resolution? 1080x or 9something?
Also, you didn't mention if you have a HDCP capable setup, what your native display resolution is, and whether or not you're using an analog or digital output.. that can all have an influence.

I have the same impression playing HD DVDs on my 67" Samsung 6767 DLP. I've been experimenting with both 6.5 and 7.1, with and w/o AnyDVD HD.

I ended up with 6.5 on both my HTPCs, one thru HDMI and second thru VGA.

I'm using a 7600GT and digital displays (with DVI connection), the projector is HDCP compatible the FSC 19P2 is not.

When the screen resolution bigger than 1920x1080 and
PowerDVD 7.1 is starting to play an HD DVD it's sizing itself automatically to 1920x1080.
If PowerDVD find AACS encryption it stop playing after 1-2 seconds.
If the movie is not encrypted (yet) it plays without any problem or degradation of picture quality.

Not here.. my desktop is 2560x1600 and PowerDVD starts up in 960x540 (I gotta learn to remember that.. all I can remember without looking it up is 9 something x 5 something). If I deactivate AnyDVD HD, then it plays in 1920x1080, then after 5 seconds it aborts with the well known error code due to no HDCP being present.

Doom9

The decrypted movie also is being played at 960x540. PowerDVD 6.5 plays that same movie in 1920x1080 (but PowerDVD 6.5 really doesn't like about half of the ripped / AnyDVD HD processed movies).
WinDVD8 HD doesn't play DVDs with AACS, and with AnyDVD HD active, it plays at 960x540.

I've only played 3 decrypted titles with PDVD 6.5 via VGA to 1600x1200 desktop non-HDCP graphics card and each has required paring the .XPL down to the feature only, in order to work.

I don't think PDVD 6.5 can handle fancy xml menuing setups.

Have you tried editing the .XPL file for those titles which don't play? It worked wonders for me.

I agree that current software players are really crap though.

If pdvd shows 1920x1080 you can see the one pixel height lines. You can count the pixels (lines) on your display.

If it is downscaling, you can see grey areas only.

Well, as i wrote, i tried to make a visual comparison, and that was my impression.

You mentioned somewhere you have a Dell 3007WFP, so same here. Cyberlinks HD Advisor shows everything green, except the GFX card, it is unknown.

However, using the HD-DVD Test Pattern Disc now i can proove that PowerDVD does not downscale on my machine. Another interesting thing is, in windowed mode PowerDVD never resizes its window, it is always keeping its size, so i resized it manually until i got a clear view of the the alternating 1 pixel lines. When not using hardware acceleration i must disable the Smart Deinterlacer or i never get a clear view of the lines. When i've found out how to make a screenie i can post my proof.

I finally got around to playing that test disc. In WinDVD's standard window size, the 1 pixel line is just a gray screen. Blown up to full screen I see lines, albeit somewhat blurred. But when I make a screenshot when the lines are on screen, all I get is a 1920x1080 screen of gray.

Then I demuxed the EVO on the test disk and played it again.. it looks the same but opening the mpv PowerDVD stays at the 960x540 size.

So in the end I'm really unsure what is going on. Am I so completely thrown out of whack by the player size (and the fact that WinDVD always reports 960x540) that I've begun to imagine things?

I wonder, is there a way to play the demuxed MPV in MPC where I could make screenshots and compare that to what I see in PowerDVD?

Doom9
12th March 2007, 19:54
For a comparison, i played back a file with WinDVD 8 NON-HD versionDemuxed via evodemux? My WinDVD8 won't open the .mpv file.. when I rename to .vc1, it at least gets listed in the file open dialog, but it's still a no go as far as playback is concerned. WinDVD8 HD also crashes when attempting to play my own HD DVD without AACS.. but only after playing the age warning thing at 960x540.
To make matters even better.. I upgraded to PowerDVD 7.3 - now when playing the test pattern disc, when the 1 line pattern is on screen, I get a line pattern even in the downscaled mode.. it looks just like the 2 line pattern looks in full screen mode.

KenD00
13th March 2007, 10:52
Demuxed with EVODemux 0.622, renamed to .vc1, played back with WinDVD 8.0 B06.101.

On my machine, WinDVD 8 HD does not like Full Metal Jacket EUR, i get a black screen with the timer running, nothing more. But the keys are in memory.

A little side note: This discussion has not much to do with BackupHDDVD-GUI any more, maybe switch to the Software Player forum? But well, you are the boss ;).

I just tested hdtvpattern disk with PDVD 6.5 and 7.3
My TV is set to 1920x1080p mode, 7600GS video card via DVI, no HDCP, however the TV is HDCP compliant.
I've got 1 pixel pattern resolved in both 6.5 and 7.3 versions, playing in full screen mode.
The conclusion is - 7.3 runs ripped HD-DVDs in full 1080p mode.
One thing I've noticed.
In run time only (7.3 version) - when you access configuration-video-advanced, there is a video quality tab, which sets quality to "auto" by default. I've tried to force it to run at "best quality", but PDVD crashes in that case. I had to find an appropriate setting in registry to revert it back to "auto".

HD-DVD Test Pattern Disc (http://www.w6rz.net/hdtestpatterns.zip)
Thanks so much for the test patterns as they provide a standard reference.

Viewed test patterns PDVD 6.5, ATI X300, Catalyst 7.2, 1920x1440p@75 desktop on Mits 2060u monitor (1600x1200 native).

In windowed mode, PDVD 6.5 opens the test pattern in full screen width. Full screen mode just centres the video and removes borders: image looks exactly the same as in windowed mode.

1 pixel alternating pattern (H or V) just shows as uniform grey, but 2 pixel alternating pattern is perfectly distinguishable.

Next I adjusted the monitor resolution to 1600x1200p75 (which is how I normally run it).

In windowed mode, PDVD 6.5 opens the test pattern in a window that is about 1200x700 (by eye). Switching to Full screen mode and then back to windowed mode resulted in a window about 960x540.

In Full screen mode, the 1 pixel alternating pattern shows as varying width grey strips. The 2, 3 and 4 pixel alternating patterns also show as varying width strips, but with more of the original black lines predominating.

The 1600x1200 test result is not surprising, as PDVD is having to scale the well defined pattern to a non-integer value.

The 1920x1440 desktop test result may still not be conclusive, since I'm trying to display more resolution than the monitor supports natively. However, since it is a wire-mask tube, whilst it can't resolve more than the 1600 native "pixels" in the horizontal direction, the phosphor strips in the vertical direction may support resolving 1080 distinct alternating 1 pixel lines. The fact that I observed a uniform grey screen for the alternating 1 pixel pattern in both horizontal and vertical orientations leads me to suspect that PDVD just might be down-resing 1920x1080p content to 960x540p and then rescaling it back to 1920x1080p on my particular setup, but I can't be sure.

I'm confused by the windowed results (1920x1440 desktop opens a 1920 wide window, whilst 1600x1200 desktop opens a 1200 or 960 wide window). As I have been double-clicking on the window to switch between Full screen and windowed modes, I'm wondering if PDVD automatically selects a 1280x720 or 960x540 window if the desktop is smaller than the source resolution and toggles between them.

It is interesting that some of the results presented in this thread for the test pattern have been obtained with graphics cards which are at least in the Cyberlink compatibility list even if they may not be HDCP compliant. My ATI X300 is definitely not even in the compatibility list, so I'm wondering if Cyberlink treats non-compatible setups differently and prefers to down-res these configurations for some reason.

Whilst I still think my results are inconclusive, I am of the opinion that PDVD 6.5 is down-resing the 1920x1080 source to 960x540p on decode and then upscaling to the display resolution on my particular setup.

Quite possible for me - see my posting above.

I think results are dependent upon the graphics card in the equation: if it is in the compatible list "approved" by Cyberlink, then no worries, but if it isn't then there is a possibility (which has yet to be proven beyond doubt) that down-resing may occur.

I got some more information on the subject: The AACS licensing agreement (http://www.aacsla.com/support/AACS_Interim_Adopter_Agreement_060215.pdf) is rather ambiguous towards the whole affair:
On page 84, section 3.5.1, it says that either the display link be protected, or use an implicit ICT.
In Table D1, it only lists digital output with copy protection though, which seems rather inconsistent considering that 3.5.1 mandates ICT for unspecified unprotected outputs.

And Cyberlink simply tells me to use a single link DVI... gosh, as if I hadn't mentioned that in order to use the full resolution of my display (by the way.. the display only supports 1280x800 when connected via single link DVI) I need dual link?

Just tried Nero Showtime with the HD-DVD plugin! First attempt on my XP Pro system with ATI X1300 crashes out at the transition from MPEG2 to VC1 saying unsupported format but will try again. Tried with and without hardware acceleration so I doun't think it is a graphics card issue.

The great news is just tried on my vista box with 8800GTS. Plays V for Vendetta perfectly from disk backup folder (backed up with Any DVD but doesn't need to be open to play the decrypted files). Nero OSD claims 1080p but I'm certain it is as the screen is a 24" PC TFT (DVI, non HDMI) and at such a close distance it is certainly native resolution. Very sharp.

Knew Nero would come through. Been a long term WinDVD user but the combination of their HD-DVD delay and comments on the forum about WinDVD and PowerDVD HD playback had me waiting for what Nero would do. Showtime seems to have gone from an afterthought to a continuously improving product.
