View Full Version : TMPGEnc encodes freezing problems...

I have been using TMPGenc 4.0 XPress to crop the black edges off of some of my VHS rips and for the most part I have great success. A few of my MPEG-1 files however when cropped and encoded come out looking fine but certaun sections of the video will cause the video and audio to freeze up. It happens whether that point or section is played to or jumoed to.

Can anyone think of any reason why this would happen? I opened the files in VDubMod and scanned the stream for errors and it found none in case that helps :)

EDIT - I read that this could happen according to CBR or VBR settings. Is there any merit to this?

What software/procedures/codecs/settings did you use for capturing?

All of the originals play fine other than the annoying black borders. I originaly captured the video using VirtualDubMod (YUY2) and encoded with Huffyuv and used Canopus Procoder to get the final product. I hope this is enough detail as it was a while since i did all this stuff.

I was able to get a few of them to work by choosing CBR audio in the final encode, but there are one or 2 that still don't work properly either way.

P.S. - Damn Setarip, you are a busy man. You have been a first responder to quite a few questions I've posted lately when I hit this big cropping phase. Keep up the good work. Alot of us less than professionals have alot to learn from you.

If you captured with VirtualDubMOD, wasn't your original capture in .AVI format?

If so, why would you then bother to use the Canopus Procoder, as an intermediate step, to convert to MPEG-1 - only to then have to use TMPGEnc to modify the MPEG-1?

Do the original .AVI captures have black borders, or were they introduced when you (for whatever reason) processed them with the Canopus Procoder?
