HD DVD Player question

I am new to the HD DVD realm but am quite familiar with backing up standard DVDs. I see many people backing up their HD DVDs. I have a few questions:

1) Is there an HD DVD Rom drive out there for computers or just the Microsoft XBOX one? How else would you be backing these up?

2) Is there a special version of dvd player to view the movie on my computer if there is an HD DVD drive available for the computer?

1. I believe most folks are using the XBOX drive.
2. So far only PDVD 6.5 worked in all my machines. PDVD 7.x always complains that my gfx card driver is not supported. And WinDVD does not have the feature to play HDDVD files off a HD.

there's also another external hd-dvd drive on the market from liteon , the LiteOn HD100-X06. but it cost's much more than the xbox360 drive!(in europe about 500euro)

OK so reading this post and others can I just check my understanding of where HD DVD sits if you want to make back ups of media. -

1. Sources of HD DVD appear currently to be from usual high street and on line sources

2. Playback and Sourcing the HD DVD Files. XBox DVD Drive plugged into a PC via USB - Correct? I don't have an Xbox, do I need one?

3. Decrypting to Hard Drive - using the tools described on this forum. I'm assuming they rip the files to Hard Drive in the same way that the current DVD decrypters do and you end up with a file set ready to play by a compatible soft player?

4. Playback of copy. Via PC hard-drive using Power DVD 6.5 or higher. Should I avoid Power DVD 7.0?

5. Future Stuff. No PC compatible HD DVD drive / burner out yet right? Toshiba look like bringing out the forst one (Toshiba - SD-H903A). Can't find any sources, anyone found one in the UK yet?

Besides above mentioned LiteOn drive, NEC released HR-1100A over a year ago, and Toshiba releases a series of HD-DVD drives, such as SD-H802A (on which SD-S802A in Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive is likely based, and which is available in OEM from BuffaloTech Japan as HDV-ROM2.4FB (http://buffalo.jp/products/catalog/storage/hddvd.html)), and TS-L802A (slimlined laptop drive).

Currently you have two choices - Cyberlink PowerDVD, or WinDVD 8. Cyberlink PowerDVD versions 6.5, 7.1 (Part of PowerDVD Platinum 7.2) and 7.3 play back HD-DVD movies, including versions backed up onto hard drive. PowerDVD 6.5 is considerd to be rather buggy, 7.1 requires a supported video card, or will not output a picture.

PowerDVD 6.6, 7.2 or 7.3 will play back Blu-Ray content.

WinDVD 8, Japanese version, plays back either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, however only from disk, not from folder, and instructions on getting it to work are in this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=751319&pp=40) on avsforums.

There was talk about DaemonTools emulating HD-DVDs sufficiently enough to convince WinDVD, but I haven't tried it.



So in short, yes, software for playback exists, but it is in it's infancy and not working very well yet.

You don't need an Xbox 360 for HD-DVD drive to work with PC. It's in external enclosure that connects over USB. Latest Windows XP update will download the stub drivers for unknown devices in the enclosure (256? megs of flash memory, designed to store content/preferences). Otherwise the drive will behave under Windows just like any other external drive you might connect over USB. You will need UDF 2.5 filesystem drivers for it in order to read the data on HD-DVD disks.

For playback of copy, first download Cyberlink HD/BD advisor from Cyberlink site, and check if your video card is supported. If it is, you can use PowerDVD 7.x. If it isn't, you have to use PowerDVD 6.5 (a very buggy version) for playback of backups from hard drive and WinDVD 8 for playback of disks.

There are currently no available HD-DVD burners out that I know of. So you can't really make an HD-DVD backup yet.

I ran the Cyberlink advisor on my desktop PC and then my lounge media player. On my desktop PC I have the Leadtek PX 7800 GTX and on my media PC has the Leadtek PX7800 GT neither of which the advisor says will work with v 7.0. Odd thing is when you click the info tab it says the following

* If you nVidia series graphic card supports PureVideo HD technology, it can support Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD playback.

The box for both cards mentions "Pure Video support" So am I right in thinking they might work with Power DVD 6.5?

One last thing. Checking cyberlinks site the only patch I found was titled "This patch file updates PowerDVD 6.0 to build 2003e" Is that the 6.5 patch?

Read this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123048), cause Doom9's had the same issue with his NVIDIA cards, and his 7800GT won't let him playback HD-DVD on his dual-link monitor. So if you have a standard monitor, you might be alright...
