Problems with PowerDVD Ultra 7.2 and PureVideo Option.

Hi guys,
since the 10th of February I do have the XBOX 360 HD-DVD Player plugged in my PC. But there is one point which actually won´t work properly. Every time I set the NVIDIA PureVideo option on and start a Film,the PowerDVD window shows only a black screen with the sound of the HD-DVD in the background. After some second the PowerDVD Player locks up and quits. Whats the point with this? Did I do anything wrong?

GPU: NVIDIA Geforce 7800GS
CPU: AMD ATHLON 64 3200+
OS: Windows XP Professional SP2 (32Bit)
PlayerSoftware: PowerDVD 7.2 Ultra
Graphics Driver: NVIDIA ForceWare 93.71

NVIDIA PureVideo only decodes mpeg2 video. What you will find on HD-DVDs is most likely either VC-1 or h264. PowerDVD will use its own decoders for these formats. And PowerDVD locking up is not something others haven't experienced. Jusr look at some other posts in this section of the forum. Even people with full HDCP chains are sometimes unable to play their HDDVD discs.

So actually the PureVideo used by PowerDVD is only the normal PureVideo? Not PureVideo HD,the one which supports Mpeg4,VC-1 and so on?

Ok,but what option do I have to activate then? Because it´s always running a little choppy. Isn´t there a GPU support option or something like this?

Actually, there are 2 "types" of PureVideo. First, there are hardware acceleration functions integrated into the GPU, i think PureVideo only supports MPEG2 and PureVideo HD MPEG2, H.264 and VC-1. These functions are used through DXVA. Then there is a DirectShow filter you can buy from NVidia which is also called PureVideo, this one only works with DVD.

PowerDVD can use DXVA to accelerate e.g. VC-1. However, this seems to be very buggy. But it could also be NVidias driver. On my machine, when i play back an AACS protected HD-DVD, after the studio logo PowerDVD crashes with DXVA enabed. Without DXVA it plays back fine. If i play back an unprotected HD-DVD PowerDVD plays fine with DXVA enabled.

Ok,I don´t have unprotected HD-DVDs so I can´t test if this works. But it´s the same as you said KenD00,when the PureVideo PowerDVD option is turned on, I hear (but do not see) the studio logo and after that it crashes. I also wrote an email to the PowerDVD support team but this was a month ago and I haven´t got a reply since that.

BTW: Which HD-DVDs aren´t AACS protected? The problem isn´t solved after I cracked all HD-DVD files on my HDD.

There were some unprotected titles mentioned here, but i forgot them. I have none of these titles, i meant i played back decrypted titles. People are reporting that PowerDVD 7.x checks for HDCP on the GFX card and does not play at all if its not present, so its interesting that you are getting sound.

Actually my Geforce 7800GS is one of the less 7800GS that have HDCP. The only which is not HDCP compliant is my 17" CRT monitor.
