which codec do you prefer and why?

I chose x264, but If I could I would mark both x264 and Xvid. They are both great codecs, but intended for slightly different purposes (I guess :) ). x264 and Xvid prove open-source applications not only to be able to keep up with but also to be superior to commercial solutions!

When I started with video encoding, I used DivX (as many people, I guess)
Later I switched to Xvid for a while, but then I came across x264.

Since that day, I never used any other codec :D

I use Xvid because I encode some of my MPEG2 DVB-S recordings to AVI to watch them on my standalone DVD player. I could use DivX instead but AutoGK doesn't seem to recognize the new version 6.5 of DivX.

x264 ofcourse.. Produces better quality video compared to its closest rival xvid for a given bitrate. Encoding speed is bit low for x.264 now, but that is just a matter of time...

x264 isn't Xvid's rival. x264's rival is e.g. Nero Digital AVC, while Xvid's rivals are DivX and Nero Digital ASP.

In many forum there is a "war" between h264(x264-nero avc-etc...)and vp7(there isn't an mpeg4 compression)...Can you compare these 2 compression stardard?

Toying around with x264 from time to time, but for serious DVD backups Xvid exclusively.

My only computer and only playback device is a laptop. Xvid is clearly superiour to x264 because of its lesser decoding CPU load, which means shorter fan running time. I prefer the quieter viewing environment, and at 1/2 DVD size both encoders produce great results anyway.

If not for the fan issue I'd probably use both encoders, depending on the actual film.

at the time of the poll.. x264.. the benefits simply outweigh the costs

I hope to switch to a wavelet codec if any ever become more usable/compatible/etc.

Errr, technically x264 isn't a codec. It is an encoder only.
