I'm trying to cut the intro from the movie out. when I export it as a direct stream the audio starts out just fine, but there are a few frames that follow the keyframe that was about 2 secconds before where i split the video (sorry long sentance). I'm wondering if there is a way to set the frame that I want to be the first frame of the output as a keyframe.

I'm using the latest VirtualDubMod

thanks,
-ben

Hello and welcome to the forum,

Beginning with the 1.7.0 version of Virtual Dub, from November 2006, VDub now has a "Smart Rendering" capability:
Build 25854 (1.7.0, experimental): [November 5, 2006]
[features added]
* New "smart rendering" feature for selective processing of video around
edit areas while copying as many existing frames as possible.

It'll reencode the parts in between the keyframes keeping the rest untouched when Direct Stream Processing, allowing you to cut on any frame you wish now. I don't use VDub, so if you have any problems using it, I won't be able to help.

Of course, it still doesn't support VBR MP3, so if your audio is VBR MP3, either remove it before working on the video, splitting it separately, allow VDub to decompress it to WAV, or perhaps reencode it to CBR MP3 and readd it to the video before sending it to VDub.. If you don't, you'll wind up with audio asynch.

Thanks, I'm using the latest version, the one that's availible through this site. When I split stuff at other locations toward the end or even just 5 minutes in the middle, it splits perfectally, nomatter if its on keyframes or not. but when i try to split in the first 2 minutes it always has the audio starting where i cut it, but the previous keyframe plus about 10 after is always stuck at the begining and they have gone over the first 10 frames so there isn't any audio async at all.

no I haven't ever hd anyproblem with audio async

Oh, so the latest VDubMods can do the same thing? Maybe it's time for me to upgrade. Anyway, I can't help, but maybe if you post in the VDub Forum on this site, someone there will know. Or try the real VDub forums, whereever they are.

I'll try there manono, i just thought I'd post here to contain the "use the damn search" (which I have) posts, but since it looks like Ihaven't gotten any, I'll go to the vdub froums

Ok, first off I HAVE used the search, so don't flame for that, I may have not tried very hard, but i did more than two searches..

Also, completely unrelated to the above, if the video is in say 25 or so FPS and when i reencode it at 30 FPS with windows media encoder 9, what negitive effects can that have (i haven't noticed any audio sync or choppy video problems)

manono has already answered your question in this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=122955) - I'd suggest returning there if you have any follow-up questions or problems with his advice, since cross-posting is against the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm).

This is why threads should be moved, and not reposted. I'll just merge the two, no big deal. Hopefully someone who monitors here will know better, although since phaeron doesn't, it might be best to ask directly on the unofficial vdub forums.

Can you post a short video that shows this effect? That might be easier than trying to guess what might be causing random out of order frames to pop up.

Yes, I gotta finish some homework, but I'll upload a 2 min video of where I'd like to have it cut, and another of what actually happens when cut there.

is there an easy to paste some images as frames in VDUBMOD? that way i could put a "this is where i want it cut" frame for 1 sec

oh, and sorry for reposting, i thought i got the ok from manono, but NBD...

@drunk3nrabbit

Hi!

I'm wondering if there is a way to set the frame that I want to be the first frame of the output as a keyframe.Although the following is somewhat lengthy in appearance, it's quite simple:

1) Load the file into VirtualDub (or VirtualDubMOD)

2) Set "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copy" (Typically done by default) and set "Video" to "Full Processing Mode"

3) From "Video" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and set to same codec as the original .AVI - and set "keyframes" to the lowest possible number (most frequent)

4) Go to very beginning of file and from "Edit" dropdown menu select "Set selection start"

5) Go to one keyframe further than you want to be the (eventual) beginning of your modified file and from "Edit" dropdown menu select "Set selection end"

6) Save this small clip with a new filename (e.g. "NewStart.avi")

7) From "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Delete frames"

8) Change "Video" setting to "Direct Stream Copy"

9) Save with a new filename (e.g. "NewPrimaryMovie.avi") - The original beginning frames have been removed

10) Load "NewStart.avi"

11) Set actual beginning of file as "Set selection start"

12) Set desired end frame of what you want to delete as "Set selection end" - and then select "Delete frames"

13) Save with a new filename (e.g. "FINAL_NewStart.avi")

14) Load "FINAL_NewStart.avi" and from "File" dropdown menu, select "Append .AVI segment" - and select "NewPrimaryMovie.avi"

15) Save with a new filename (e.g. "Final_Joined.avi")
