Greetings,
This is a recient problem, and I am a little concerned. The DVDs I burn have trouble playing in older Sony stand alone players, and I just can't figure out why. Here's my workflow.
-Edit videos in Premiere Pro 1.5
-Export to M2V using Adobe Media Encoder
(settings CBR 8.0 AC3 Encoded Audio 16:9 disc)
-Author on Scenarist create Directories
-Burn with Nero 7 to standard Video DVD
-on NEC standard burners purchased in the last 2 years
The discs work GREAT on everything but Sony. Computers, any crappy DVD player/video game system. Even the PS2 (sony) will play them. Just not stand alone players.
Any help will be appreciated!!!

Are you burning +R, or, -R DVDs. That may be your problem indicator. I suggest you go here:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php
Enter your make, and model numbeer, and it will tell you what it will play, and won't.
Good luck,

Hi!Just not stand alone players.Just not ANY brands of standalone players or, as you said initially, just not your older SONY standalone player(s)?
Do the SONY players generate a "C13" error, or is something else happening?
This is a recient problemHave you changed brands and/or format of burnable media recently?
Have you tried running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on the problematic player(s)? Maxell makes one that sells for approximately $10US...
Please go to Sony support site, concerning class action lawsuit about Sony DVD player operational issues.

Hi everyone, I am also having the same problem as doublerig, but not entirely. I've had my Sony player since like 2001 and it plays all DVD releases. But since late last year I've been having problems with some if not most of the backups.
First dvd-decrypter began giving me problems burning during the process or once it was done and when I would pop it in the Sony and it would read/still does CANNOT PLAY DISC. I have since then been using imgburn and it's worked at times but results the same as decrypter.
I've also tried ripit4me but it helps sometimes. Now I've began using nero 7 trial version just to burn the ISO image and it is a better solution as far as burning goes, but ultimately my Sony player keeps displaying the same error upon insert. I've even verified the disc with all 3 "burners" and it doesn't help. Even though I do get read errors when I do this for every backup. Nevertheless, my good copies which work had the same verification errors. And that's another thing, whenever I want to verify a copy, I always get errors.
I just burned 3 copies of "BARNYARD" and one from the old school "THE CROW" and none play on the Sony. I've used the following discs: HP, SONY, IMATION and they all result the same, all being DVD+ which have always played just fine.
BTW, I'm using a NEC (2.4x) burner which I purchased about 4 years ago and I use dvd shrink, dvd decrypter & fab, imgburn & ripit4me. Sorry for all this writting, but if there's any tool or patch to work with or perhaps an adjustment, I'd appreciate the help. I basically waste more dvds in errors than what I keep :(
Thanks again.

I would go for a new burner.
What name media have you been using?
How much free memory do you have?
Do you keep the pc clean of unnecessary programs and spyware?
Do you keep the system defraged?

Ok I'll try the cleaning disc for the burner. One thing though, I know the burner's old at 2.4x but isn't it better when you burn at a slower speed anyhow? I figure even if it's outdated it should function just fine.
The media I've used is HP, Khypermedia, Sony and Imation all being DVD+.
Also my Sony player (2001) DOES NOT specify that it supports
DVD+/-, yet it has played for over 2 years now the media/ burnt movies just fine. Strangely the problem began recently just last year.
I don't defrag much though I know I should. And the only thing I do is upgrade the newer versions of DVDFAB and RIPIT4ME. At the moment I have around 17 gigs if free space.
BTW, any idea why some movies (copies) will freeze in some chapters? Any tool to avoid this or to work with in between Shrink and the burning process? At this point my problems are not with decrypting, but during burning.

Wow that'll be even better if it can clean both, burner and player. Thanks.
Ok something has me baffled during and after the burning process with either Nero, Decrypter or Imgburn. So bare
with me and see if there's something in between that I'm not seeing.
I'll use Ripit4me or DVDFab (both always uptodate) to decrypt and that works.
Next I use Shrink and open the video folder where my files are at and that works. I check off a language I
don't want (if needed) and then I let it analyze the whole thing. Once done I'll press back up and it'll begin it's final function so to create the ISO image file and that works.
(Now I figure that wether I choose (default) sharpness or maximum smoothness, the "image file" should turn out just fine- right?)
Now here's where the fun begins:
1) Shrink doesn't show me the option to create the ISO AND burn with Nero. So I'll create it, find the "image" and click on it and then it'll open Nero, where it'll set up the window for burning. This is the smoothest burning process by far compared to the next two. Once burning is done a window will show finished and the disc tray will pop out. I put the copy in the Sony player and as soon as it tries to load, it stops and reads CANNOT PLAY DISC. Yet the disc clearly shows it was fully burned. Now I put it back on my PC and the drive stays there, I guess in limbo, trying
to recognize it but eventually it doesn't or it'll stay there forever 'till I eject it. Also it'll read disc not empty but it wont recognize it as a movie, unlike when you pop in the real thing.
2) Shrink allows me to create the ISO and burn it with Decrypter once finished. So when I do this burning is a 50/50 chance that I take that it may or may not give me an error during the process. When finished, it will play that "funny
island tune" displaying it's done. Now check this out: when I click OK my drive will show at the bottom left corner of the window opening device- something happens here. It'll stay there for a while trying to "open it" and when it does it'll show again disc not empty. I'll pop it in the Sony and again I get CANNOT PLAY DISC.
3) With Imgburn it's the same exact thing as Decrypter (once I find the ISO and begin burning) in which I may or may not get an error during the session and same result once finished burning and player load/display.
Finally, regardless if I verify a copy with any of the 3 from above, I get errors as a result from the reads as well as a
freeze if my PC tries to read the copy when it's reinserted.
And guys this is my dilemma. This gets very frustrating time and time again, specially after wasting all these blanks.
I appreciate all of you who keep reading and for your followthroughs with my situation and for your time.

Get a new Burner! Newegg has NEC's for around $30 US.

Me too! I tried IMGBurn, but none of the DVD's played on any of my SONY PLAYERS, just on the computers.
I used to use (WXP) DVD Decriptor, DVD Shrink and burn with Nero 6, which auto burned when I hit Backup. All worked great.
Now on my new system (Vista-UGH!), I use DVD Decriptor, DVD Shrink and Nero 7 which doesn't auto burn when I hit Backup.
I don't know how to set DVD Shrink to use Nero 7 to auto burn.
Suggestions please!

Toasty - Given that your DVD player is 6 years old, it's not inconceivable that it's simply going bad. Sadly, it is not realistic to expect DVD players to last as long as other electronic components. I've seen DVD players go bad at 4 years, others have reported problems after 2 years. You may just need to buy another player. I know what Sony players were like in 2001 as my brother had one and they are light years behind the times. Sony players from that era often wouldn't even play CD-R.
BillB - Here is a link to an article which explains (look at the bottom of the page) why you may not want to use a combo of DVDShrink and Nero on your DVDs:

It had to be IMGBurn. I did a burn using Nero 7 and it played on both Sony Players. All other DVD's play great, which were burned with Nero 6 before I got the new system.
Both my Sony Players are less than 6 months old and play fine.
Both burners are new as of a month ago.
Maybe IMGBurn codes and Sony codes have a conflict !?!?

@BillB
Try setting IMGBurn to burn at something LESS THAN MAXIMUM...

I'm gonna get one of my friends with a newer player, to test out the backups which the Sony doesn't play and see if that's
the problem.
Yesterday night I was fed up with this whole issue and deleted
the programs which I've been using, including the Nero 7 trial version. I restarted my PC and reinstalled Decrypter, Shrink and DVDFab. I reburned "The Crow" since I already had the ISO saved and the movie works on the Sony.
I will continue to try w/e else I've got and see what happens from there. Although I'll consider buying the cleaner anyways.
BTW, is there anything I can do about fixing a few freezes in some chapters of the backups I work on? I've already had this problem with "The Guardian","Borat", "Casino Royale" and possibly a few others.
Thanks.

The usual answers - Use higher quality burnable media and burn at a lower speed...
Ok well I always burn at 2.5x, so that sounds ok to me. Now how can I find the difference in better media? Is there a place
which shows which brand is better?
I use HP and Sony.
At one point I used also Khypermedia and Imation.

Hey everyone, sorry for the delay but I've got great news. It seems that all this time my errors and problems with playback had to do with the media I was using.
Just over a week ago I purchased Memorex blanks and all my backups have been great results. Not a single error, not even from the prior movies which weren't coming through. I even bought a new burner just in case which I haven't opened, but I wont be needing it now and will return it.
So it seems like I've found my solution for the moment. And so thanks to you all for your help and replies.
