Hello,
I have a somewhat older system (Athlon XP 2800+) with a Geforce 6600 in it which I use for playing video (amoung other things)
I generally use FFDShow for decoding stuff and Media Player Classic for playing.
I understood Nvidia's Purevideo decoder allows for use of the video card's processing power for stuff like deinterlacing and post-processing.
this sounded like a good idea, because my PC is not capable of doing very good deinterlacing with motion compensation without slowing down.
I installed the trail of the purevideo codecs, but I don't see them showing up in the list of filters when I play a video. I also do not see them anywhere to configure. It says on the website that there will be a system tray icon to configure... well, there isn't.
Also, as I look at the documentation, it looks to me like Purevideo only comes into play with mpeg-2 content. In that case it's all but worthless to me.
Am I wrong, or is there a way to use the video card processor to deinterlace, scale and soon?

Although there's a good amount of additional (and somewhat confusing), the very last item at the bottom of the page caught my eye and likely supports your (negative) speculation:*The NVIDIA PureVideo decoder is now the new name for the NVIDIA DVD Decoderhttp://www.nvidia.com/object/purevideo_overview.html

sounds like conflict with your directshow filters get gspot and use it open a mpeg2 file - maybe your dsfilter merits are messed-up
you can use mpc to in the externel filters tab to force/prefer the purevideo decoder

aw dang! Is that to say it's only good for mpeg-2 stuff? I can't link it to other format decoders and use it for the scaling/deinterlacing/deblocking? Well that just defeats the whole purpose!
I was hoping that the mega fast GPU that nVideo likes to talk about could be put to some use for deinterlacing and whatnot.

in ffdshow you can use hardware de-interlacer in the output tab, and mpc use hardware resizer if you the ps2 bicubic - but you need redist-dx9 latest
you can use haali media splitter for resizing to, search for the link

and haali is here http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/

actually it can, it does realtime 1080i to 1080p (with per pixel adaptive deinterlacing) via DXVA 1* but only as allready said for Mpeg-2 their is no filter yet from the Nvidia Engineers for H.264 or VC-1 and for sure they still won't be for a little longer time period (seling purevideo licenses to cyberlink and co).
*Per Pixel Adaptive Deinterlacing stoped working for me since some new driver revisions on my PCI-E 7600 Gs tough, but i didn't test it for a longer time now, maybe it works again. If it works it's really nice and fast almost compareable with tdeint in quality but much much faster :)

I see the option for hardware deinterlace, but it only allows for Bob and Weave. Neither of which are all that good.

Bob and Weave are the generic names for the DirectShow deinterlacers, the driver writers determine what happens when you choose one. They aren't the same as, say, VLC's Bob and Weave. If supported you'll get AVIVO or Purevideo deinterlacing. If it's older drivers or some off-brand it probably won't work well at all.

Yep and i allways wondered if it could be used (Nvidias PixelAdaptive Deinterlacing) also for other content then Mpeg-2, maybe by forceing it to be callled via Directshow by it's CLSID {6CB69578-7617-4637-91E5-1C02DB810285} but seems no one tried it yet ;)

It is possible to use hardware deinterlacing for vc-1. Discussion here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120746

ah I see. So does that mean I should uncheck the deinterlace option within FFDShow and instead check the "hardware deinterlace" option in output? Or does the hardware acceleration work with the FFDshow Deinterlace?

What type of content are you trying to deinterlace, codecwise? If it's interlaced XviD then yes, disable ffdshow deinterlace and enable output/hw deinterlace. This will enable hardware deinterlacing although I'm not entirely convinced it really is the same Spatial-Temporal De-Interlacing as used by the Purevideo MPEG-2 decoder.

Mpeg-4 asp and avc stuff mostly (xvid, divx occasionally avc). Also the occasional WMV, but mostly xvid

For any kind of renderer deinterlacing to work, the decoder needs to output VideoInfoHeader2 and set the interlaced flags correctly. Not all decoders support this interface. If the decoder only outputs VideoInfoHeader (not 2), then the renderer will have no way of knowing that the content is interlaced.

Just to don't make necessary a new topic, can anyone tell me if there's any way to use the ATI WMV Acceleration with MPC? I can only make it work with WMP. I'm using the MS WMV codecs from WMP 9, VMR7 windowed MPC render.

Are you sure it works in WMP? WMP9 did not support DXVA decoding.

Yeah, I know, but if I enable WMV Acceleration, WMP9 drops the CPU usage from 75% to 40% (running 'nVidia Pure Video 1080p' video demonstration). I tested it a few times, with other WMV videos to make sure it's not a coincidence.
But, just to be really sure, we can confirm the installed WMV codec version, can we? How? :)

Yeah, that's really odd. Take a look in \Windows\System32. There should be a wmvdmod.dll or a wmvdecod.dll in there. Check the file version in the properties page.

There is no 'wmvdecod.dll', but... Wow! The 'wmvdmod.dll' properties says this version: 10.00.00.3650. Crazy thing.
BTW, how can I enable WMV Acceleration in MPC? :)

You must've installed the 9.5 WM Format runtime at some point.

You can try setting HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Scrunch\WMVideo\DXVA to 1 (DWORD). If that doesn't work, you might need to update to v11 before it'll start working.

There's no 'DXVA'. I created one (DWORD in HEX with '1' in the value), but didn't work. So, you suggest that I've to install WMP11 codecs to make MPC works with ATI Acceleration?

Yeah, that ought to do it. Keep in mind, btw, that ATI currently only supports WMV3 (Simple/Main Profile) acceleration. They haven't implemented WVC1 (Advanced Profile) support yet.

No donut for me. Just installed WMP11 codecs pack and WMP9 can't work with overlay anymore (no image, just sound). MPC works fine, but without WMV Acceleration. I really don't care about WMP because I don't use it, but would be nice if MPC works with acceleration.

Not exactly ideal, but alright...
Try creating a DWORD value "DXVATRACE" under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Scrunch\WMVideo\ and set it to 1. Play a WMV video in WMP. A file named c:\dxva.log will be created. If the file contains a bunch of information about DXVA decoding, then DXVA is being used for WMV decoding. If it's empty (or has just a line or two), then DXVA is not used. After that try the same with MPC.
If it doesn't work in WMP - then you most likely don't have DXVA WMV supported in your video hardware/driver.
As for overlay... I don't think DXVA is supposed to work with overlay in the first place. I think it requires at least VMR7.

I tried to install WMP11, and man... Although WMV Acceleration now 'works' with MPC, this thing is REALLY bugged. Some videos open, but the colors are very messed. Other can't even be opened. So I gave up.
Someone here said once that WMV Acceleration from ATI is broken. Now I understand. :(
Thanks anyway.

Does this mean if ffdshow outputs VideoInfoHeader2, then proper deinterlacing by the hardware can occur? And, this is independent of whether or not PureVideo is installed?
I have the latest PowerDVD, and nvidia's purevideo hardware acceleration support is included, so I'm not quite sure where that fits into the picture...probably not at all...:)

A recent Nvidia video driver is most likely all you need. As long as the VMR knows the video is interlaced, it can invoke the hardware deinterlacer. PureVideo is more or less just Nvidia's fancy name for DXVA.
