I read in a brit magazine that adult industry has been put off for using blue ray system.

they says same problem arised with betamax, when adult industry used VHS.

in fact, it is the adult industry which will "say" what system will be used cuz it is all about money, and the porn industry generate billiards of US$.

some of you have seen this article???.

This actually came up when both formats were introduced last winter, and again when this X3 (HD-DVD-9) thing came out. No idea whether it's true or not, although in such industries, the cheaper the better.

I think porn is less a factor this time because more of it is online than on physical movies. However, if Joe Pervert can head out to his local video store and find porn on HD-DVD but not on Blu-ray, guess which player he's going to buy?

Blu-ray will die because it is expensive to manufacture disks and players. That's really only the case because of Sony's delusional belief that it is a monopoly and can therefore act like one. The main reason Blu-ray was created in the first place was because Sony wanted ownership of the HD format. It's the same exact crap they've pulled with Betamax, Minidisk, and UMD. It's never worked before and it never will.

I'm not sure there was ever a confirmed statement from the blu-ray camp that porn could not be released on the format. Regardless, they have since stated that they, "welcome participation from all companies," including adult content producers.

i think an idea as to how the format war is taking shape can be gathered from looking at the HD VUK and BD VUK stickies in the decrypting forum.

of course it's early days yet, but there seems to be an early (massive) lead in the HD camp. i don't think PS3 can take up that kind of slack.

and consider it was around 2 weeks head start on decrypting each format. they should be evening out by now, but blu-ray is still way way behind.

and exports from japan are getting more expensive it seems, which could be bad news for the PS3 and sony.

Somehow I have the feeling pr0n currently only takes up a few percent of the total DVD sales/rentals now, I doubt it will have a deciding impact on the survival of Blu-ray.

But maybe I'm wrong, maybe someone has actual figures on the the market share of pr0n on the DVD market (US & Euro)? :)

The porn industry's worth several billion dollars, most of it from L.A, so I think it has a fairly commanding share in media sales figures world-wide. Their dilemma is cheap mass-production (which they have with DVD, and can change to HD-DVD quite easily) vs the bigger capacity of BluRay. Capacity vs cost.... which would sell more? ;)

Second: I'm not surprised Blu-ray is "ahead", if you look at the companies supporting it vs. HD-DVD, the latter is really the underdog (company-wise)

I hope HD DVD will win (or "win" ) since Blu-ray is spear-headed by Sony that nice company, which distributed free rootkits :mad:

And there's one often ignored fact: the only BD player to sell in significant numbers is the PS3 - and it is often sold with a coupon for a or even multiple discs.. but they count as software unit sold, too. And that gets me right to my next point:
Why are there no numbers of actual units sold?. If 100% = a couple thousand units, it really doesn't matter if the other format has 50% because considering the actual numbers, both formats hardly matter at all.
The two staunchest BD supporters without a financial stake in the format - Fox and Disney - were staunch DIVX supporters once upon a time, too. When the money went to DVD, so did they.

If Blu-ray had already one, as proclaimed by Sony, then why did Dreamworks just announce their first HD title for both formats?

Unless you are prepared to lose your money's worth, at this point you better ride it out. Dual format players may or may not become the norm - at this point nobody can tell. Look at how DVD did in its first year: http://www.dvdinformation.com/News/press/CES010807.htm - about similar to the HD formats (those numbers don't count gaming consoles so neither should we) - and compared to the HD formats, the upgrade to DVD was hassle free and not only improved picture quality (many people around that time didn't even get to see that thanks to crappy TVs), but it also brought more convenience (rewind anyone?). The move to HD brings a new TV and longer boot up times so for starters we're talking inconvenience.

So let's put the "X" has won on hold until a studio drops support for one of the formats - because in the end studios go where the money is and they will stop selling in function of the market that is available for a certain format.

And back to topic: did the pr0n industry "make" DVD? I think it pretty much sold itself and the naked ladies just helped them along. All the stories about pr0n always mention the tape format war, but never give any background.. is there any comprehensive writeup out there (with numbers of player and software sold, studios that supported which format, launch dates, software/hardware lineup, etc?) I figure those are all factors that need to be considered, too, before you can draw any conclusions.

I think that this is the most important thing right here, more pron found online now, faster, free, and in abundance compaired to when vhs and betamax were coming out. Hopefully we can find a nice balance with Blu-ray, and HD-DVD. Something where they can co-exist.

My personal opinion,
Maybe if some big brand name in HiFi Market like Pioneer and Denon are brave enough to launch DVD player that could play not only DivXHD but also WMVHD format, this will be a fall down for not only BlueRay but also HD-DVD. And more dangerous if equipped with DTS-HD capabilities too :p

Because pretty much I am really sick with this format war. Imagine watching so much HD DVD disc and BlueRay sell in my favorite DVD store but none of them are standard format yet.

LOL, that just gave me a flashback to a conversation I had in 2002...
A friend of mine was a TV reporter with a local station in Boston. She told me that she had decided to quit the buiness becuase of the impending change over to HD broadcasts. First of all, her producer told her that she would have to change how she dressed, becuase HD was going to make her look old (she was 31 at the time!). Furthermore, it meant all new makeup techniques, lighting and sets, so nobody that worked in production for the news was happy about it. At all.

Its good to hear that the Porn stars are taking it in stride. :)

IMO no way pr0n will decide the Blu-Ray/HD DVD battle

Most pr0n is poor quality still shot in 4:3 format on cheap DV camera's with Dolby Digital 2.0 and distributed mostly on cheapest DVD-5 media, HD camera's are still too expensive as is the new media

Also: prOn is on the intarweb now, it's very easy to get (from various sources), it wasn't like that in the VHS/Betamax era

If people really wanted top (technical) quality for their prOn there would be DD 5.1 or DTS and more DVD-9's for most prOn movies. The market demands are different. I guess people don't need A+ quality for a throw away product ;)

Well, TDK has already produced 8 layer 200GB blu-ray disks more than 1 year ago, that was in april 2006:

The 15Gb HDDVD-R is the same price as the 25Gb BD-R. With BR you get 10Gb more for the same price. They are now both 9,99 € (maybe even less at some of the discount sites). And prices are dropping monthly. It's dropping faster than when the CD-R and DVD-R started out years ago.

For the same price I can put more movies on my disk (or the same amount of movies with a 40% better picture quality -> this is a huge bitrate difference), and the difference will only increase as they add layers. The HDDVD is 60% of the size of the BR. An 8 layer HDDVD would be 120Gb, this is 80 Gb less than the 8 layer BR. And this is supposing that we ever see 8 layer HDDVDs. As I haven't seen anyone talking about them I don't even know if 8 layers are possible on HDVD.

Anyway, with BR we know where we are going. 8 layers have already been produced and announced. I am not going with HDDVD, that's for sure.

No matter how much money the porn industry generates it's still a small segment of the overall market. The market will be shaped more by the general consumer and off-the-shelf movies, especially family movies and Disney movies. I'm still waiting to see which format the majority of the new blockbuster movies settle on and that will be the clear winner.

My daughter would force me to buy anything if it was the only way for her to watch Pirates 3! :)

The entire Blu-ray porn thing is overblown. As others have said Vivid found a plant that would do it.

The big issue is that Sony themselves won't make the disks. Guess who owns most of the plants. Also Disney now has a rule where they won't do business with a plant that also produces porn so they wont do it. The third reason why its hard to find BR porn is that it costs considerably more to make a BR disk compared to a HD-DVD disk, so most companies are sitting on the fence to keep from taking a bath.
