I have DVDShrink 3.2. When I try to back up the files as an .iso (by saying "save .iso"), it keeps making an .mds file and a bunch of *.IO# files. No matter who I ask, they just say, "well, mds is used by blah blah blah." That's not what I'm looking for. I want to know how to have DVDShrink 3.2 just make the *.iso file.
Thanks

I'm guessing that you're trying to create an .ISO image file and save it to a FAT32 formatted hard drive (Whether because you're O/S is Win98 or you haven't created an NTFS-formatted drive under WinXP). FAT32 cannot process individual filesizes greater than 4GB.
Therefore, DVD Shrink has created a SET of .ISO image files and an .MDS information file. The information file can be read and used by DVD Decrypter and IMGBurn to join the multiple parts of the .ISO and burn as an .ISO image file...

Hmm.... but I didn't have this problem with other versions of DVDShrink. How do I tell how my hard drive is formatted? Maybe that will shed some light on the situation.

In "My computer", right-click on the drive and select "Properties" - and see what it says next to "File system"...

Yeah, it's an NTFS formatted drive. So I still don't know why it's making *.mds files.

I didn't have this problem with other versions of DVDShrink.That's because the ability to generate split ISOs and MDS files was first added with v.3.2.0.14:Version 3.2.0.14 - 25 July 2004
-------------------------------
Added automatic support for splitting ISO files if they are
saved to a FAT32 partition. In this case a .MDS file is
also output which can be burned with DVD Decrypter and mounted
by Daemon Tools. MDS files can additionally be opened with
DVD Shrink from the "Open Disc Image..." menu
BTW - You say,When I try to back up the files as an .iso (by saying "save .iso")When in fact, in DVD Shrink, one selects "Backup" and then selects "ISO image file" as a "Backup target". Silly question, perhaps, but are you sure you're talking about DVD Shrink and not DVD Decrypter?

Shrink NEVER outputs to as mds to NTFS, you must have taken a look at the wrong partition.

yup, my external is FAT32. Wow, that's annoying. But, at least I got it to work. But, I don't want to convert my FAT32 to NTFS because of compatibility issues with Mac and Linux. Oh well

You only have a PERCEIVED problem. the split ISO plus the MDS file allows you to save to (and burn from) your FAT32 drive with NO extra work on your part ;>}
