I just reformatted my computer yesterday. But Before that I needed to backup all the stuff I had on my computer. I had around 20 gigs worth of Music, Media, Documents, Apps and so forth. I wasn't quite sure on how to back it up so I googled and someone said make an Iso out of your data and then burn it to a dvd. So I did just that.

I used MagicISO to make the ISO and then I burned the ISO to DVD.

Then today I tried to extract the files and such but all the DVD's are showing up as blanks. All of them. I tried MagicISO, ISO Buster, and even DVD Decrypter to try and get my data.

Is there something I did wrong. Is all my data gone. Please help.

The questions might seem stupid...
How did you burn 20 GB on a DVD?

Quote:
What is the size limitation of the ISO image that MagicISO can process?
10GB.

Was it a standard DVD-R (4.7G) or a double-layer disc (8.5G)?
Was the ISO file smaller than the disc size?

@Huerta

Hi!

Perhaps this will sound like another "stupid question" but, did you actually NOT check the ISOs to make sure they were successful backups BEFORE reformatting your drive?

I didn't burn all the data to one DVD but 6. And yeah setarip I checked twice before I reformatted.

And yeah setarip I checked twice before I reformatted.1) So, you're saying that before reformatting your hard drive, your system WAS able to read the burned DVDs?

2) If so, is your now-reformatted system able to read ANY DVDs (or CDs)?

3) Just curious - Why didn't you just burn the FILES as a Data DVD? What would you have expected to gain by burning as .ISO?

1 - Yes

2 - It is able to read Dvd's and CD's just fine.

3 - I tried burning as just plain data dvds with Nero but it ended up giving me a bad disc in one and an error in another try which also gave me a bad disc. So I googled around and this option came up and I tried it and tested it and everything was fine. I have absolutely no clue what went wrong. It pisses me off so much. I had so many projects, home video footage, documents and music and now it's all gone.

I'm just going to stay with CD's next time since I never had a problem with those.

Do you know IsoBuster?
http://www.isobuster.com/

I have met some DVD-Rs when burned seemed okay, but I was not able to load them thereafter (see via Explorer, file managers etc.), HOWEVER I was able to see the sessions in IsoBuster along with the files. Please take a look!

He said he tried IsoBuster.

If you checked them before formatting, then the problem has to be that somehow, your new system is missing some sort of driver that can read them. I'd suspect the problem might be that they were written as UDF 2.5 when windows can only natively read 2.01, but they also weren't readable in IsoBuster. It might be that your new DVD drive drivers aren't as complete as your old ones, I don't know. You might try putting them in some other computers to see if they're readable elsewhere.

Would you happen to have another PC you can try opening the DVDs with? There might have been some trouble with your burner prior to format that's why Nero was acting up. Or the media you used was no good. What speed did you write with, what's the brand of the blanks that you used and what program did you use to burn the ISOs?

You basically got the right idea. I didn't install the drivers and I couldn't find the disc so I called the hotline for my DVD Drive and they emailed me the drivers. So I installed and now all the data is showing up again. Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it. Problem Solved.

Now you 've got me confused!

Earlier, I asked you if your now-reformatted system was able to read ANY DVDs (or CDs). You said, It is able to read Dvd's and CD's just fine.yet now you are saying,I didn't install the drivers and I couldn't find the disc so I called the hotline for my DVD Drive and they emailed me the drivers. So I installed and now all the data is showing up again. So how were you able to read DVDs and CDs PRIOR to installing the drivers?
